Day off in Christmas week : Edited with dates

Post by Selhurst »

As we have the 27th and 28th December off this year, do we still get our usual rostered day off that week? My day off is Thursday, just wondering if I would still have this day off? Thanks :Very Happy

The Ofcom consultation about an exception for Saturday 1 January runs until 13 December. We expect Ofcom to make a decision shortly after that.

Friday 24 December - Normal service day
Saturday 25 December - Christmas Day
Sunday 26 December - Boxing Day
Monday 27 December - Christmas Day Public Holiday
Tuesday 28 December - Boxing Day Public Holiday
Wednesday 29 December -Normal service day
Thursday 30 December - Normal service day
Friday 31 December - Normal service day
Saturday 1 January - New Year's Day - awaiting Ofcom decision to become a non-working day
Sunday 2 January - Sunday
Monday 3 January - New Year's Day Public Holiday
Tuesday 4 January - Normal service day (Public Holiday in Scotland)

The normal rule of thumb is...

If A day is a bank holiday, then you get it off, and if it's your day off on that day you 'get it back'.
If A day is classed as a 'NON SERVICE DAY' then you get it off but if it's your day off on that day you WON'T get it back.

I'm near enough sure that is correct.

If your part time and a reserve/float you will get shafted and have your day off on the Saturday/xmas day. Even though throughout the year your day off as been Tuesday.

Tuesday 28th Dec is an official bank holiday. You get the day back, it might involve some fighting, but you will get it back.

The only day off you lose over xmas is if your day off falls on sat 25th as it's a non service day. I will be losing it this year but I guess others have lost it in the past so it all evens out I guess. I try and convince myself that it's not losing a day off but others gaining one!

Still not convinced myself that yet but I'm working on it!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I'm sure instead of having the day clawed back you can ask for it to be paid as o/t. I love watching the dims face when you ask for the pay instead

I've said this before but a lot of DOM's prefer to pay the OT, especially if it pushes your OT rate for that week into the 1st 10hrs
rate as it costs less for RM and also they don't have another days leave to cover further down the line.

Yes, you do. I did last yr and wrote an email to the have your say thingy. Got a reply saying 'tough' , basically and you may fall lucky another yr! Sat off again this yr as changed duty and I'm now sat off Christmas day. I feel so happy for all my colleagues though who are getting an extra day off, honest,I do. Makes me shake my head in disbelief really, someone on Friday as their day off could come in to work it, get £100 AND have the same number of days off as me that week. Once again , thanks CWU for making everything fair and equal.

Less than 15 years ago , Royal Mail expected all staff to work the hours they would normally work on the non service day on their other days of attendance for that week.

The reason being is the non service day is not the same as a Bank Holiday and therefore individuals contracted to a 37 hour working week will work less hours that week. The same applies for part timers who would be expected to normally work the Saturday.

The CWU negotiated an end to claw back of hours when a non service day was requested.

However we could not convince Royal Mail to pay Bank Holiday credits for a non service day especially as anyone who gets the non service day off will probably being working less hours that week. And yes I know it is Christmas Day and New Years Day but they are non service days and not Bank Holidays.
