The 7 day service thread plus Royal Mail survey

Post by POSTMAN »

Our mission is to connect customers, companies and countries across the UK, nobody else does this better than us. We have been able to expand our Sunday service we officially launched on mother’s day this year by over 2700% in the space of 7 months….just imagine where we could be this time next year!!!
There are so many opportunities this has the potential to create for us…….
Let's make this a massive thread, I will update as and when I get info.
Your thoughts on Sunday deliveries?

Image

1. What is being proposed?
We want to invest in a seven-day parcel service that goes everywhere in the country, at the same price. We want to offer ‘Sundays for all’, levelling up service provision and ensuring that every household in the UK, and every business whether small medium or large, can participate in the e-commerce revolution.

2. Why is this being proposed?
Accelerated by the pandemic, the world is has changed and customers are demanding more parcels and using fewer letters. Domestic parcel volumes are up around a third compared to pre-COVID, and customers are demanding more convenient deliveries, more often, and with greater control and visibility over when their parcel will arrive. Letters are in long-term decline, with volumes down by more than 60% since their peak in 2004/5. Posties are only delivering around a third of the volumes they were then – down from more than 20 billion letters to around 7 billion now – whilst the number of addresses they have to deliver to has grown by around 3.5 million in the same period. Given the significant changes we continue to see in the market, we continue to believe the best way to ensure that the USO meets customers’ needs is to rebalance what we do more towards parcels.

3. Does this mean that letters are no longer important to Royal Mail?
We love letters and believe there is an important role for them as part of the UK’s social fabric. But have to acknowledge that letter volumes are down more than 60% since their peak in 2004/5. So, it’s time to start defining what a sustainable USO is for the future.

My personal thoughts, be honest.

Sunday Deliveries are benefitting many brands
We've all worked together to deliver a new service to many of our customers and start the transformation of our business to a 7 day service.
A fabulous effort from everyone so far and something we can all be proud of, thank you!

Absolutely no chance of volunteers and a mad scramble for the door if its forced.

Hopefully there’d be enough volunteers on OT plus the new starters who work Sundays already at my DO to cover everything.

If not, again hope is the word, and I’d hope I could get out of it on religious grounds (I genuinely play guitar in a church band).

Should all that fail then I’d be one of many (I suspect) handing my notice in.
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

It is forced, in new contracts it says "working 5 days out of 7" despite the ad for the job saying "Monday to Saturday."
Got my first Sunday coming up, newbie who started a month before me did her first a few weeks back. By all accounts it's a bunch of 739s as people don't want to open the door to a postie at 10am on a sunday

Well as a Mail Centre worker if it becomes common practice that means Saturday night working for our part of the Company if that comes to pass for me I sense a 6 month work related stress absence whilst I seek new employment.

If it's just Tracked then RM could have it as the one day with time slots, with the ability to see how far off your delivery is.

Like it or not, it WILL happen in some shape or form at some point.

You can probably near enough guarantee that whenever the next pay negotiations take place that RM will absolutely insist on potential Sunday working for all DO staff, and Saturday night working for MCs and RDCs

You know how it is now, 'can you work your day off?', if we do Sunday as well 'can you work both your days off?' meaning we'd be forced into working 7 days a week, every week.

I'd sooner be waterboarded than do a Sunday to help out this shower of s**t.

Lots of unnecessary drama here , it’s a few tracked items that will be covered by newbies and volunteers at various DO,s.The union would never sign up to the whole workforce working Sundays and they know it .

I'd like to buck the trend here if I may and say that Sundays are (by far) my favourite day of the week.

I'm at a stage in my life that I'm happy to just get two days off a week which is different to the management position I previously held before joining RM about six months ago.

Sundays are £18+ an hour, come in sort some parcels, number them up in order and spend the day delivering in the countryside listening to the radio. No management, no stress and very easy money. Each to their own I know and I totally understand the reticence.

Just thought I'd offer a different perspective.

Well we're not going to be delivering mail 7 days a week, so it's about parcels isn't it. Our hand is being forced at every turn by these other courier companies and what they're offering in terms of tracking and convenience to all customers.

We're told it's what the customer/consumer wants, but I do wonder how much of that want or desire has been imparted by these industries pushing their wares - like drug dealers - and 'getting the kids hooked' on the promise of cheap prices, plentiful supply and availability whenever you want it. I digress.

I do still think RM have the advantage in the universality of service - we cover more places, and know how to get to them better, right? Well, if we have the experience for sure, and with our heritage we surely do. The only weak link in that is our training, or lack thereof.

So, we must move with the times or risk losing the business to the other companies. If there's any good to come out of it, then surely it will create new jobs, or give people the opportunity of overtime (not really sure how many actually want it these days!), or flexibility in working hours.

This will come in at some point down the line to be part of the contract, I feel.

Have to agree with you there mate, I dont miss 70hr weeks as a manager with reams of paperwork and 24hr emails and phone calls. As you say driving around the countryside delivering a few parcels and tracked on a Sunday. Count me in too!

Yeah I don't miss it at all and can totally relate to everything you've said. Weekdays at my delivery office can be chaotic to say the least but Sundays are a breeze I actually enjoy coming in for them.
