RMCtv : History making - hear from CWU's Terry Pullinger

On the day we revealed our half year results, the CWU's Terry Pullinger has given his views on the progress we're making with our agreement.






I think it's been massively impressive six months and this history making six months within royal mail when we considered, the the turnaround in relationships, the progress that we've made on the agreement when I think of the the reach, our role in society,
the universal service to every single person at desire to build on that, the ambition that still live to to drive that amount of change and during a pandemic.

I think is is hugely impressive, and I think everyone should be extremely optimistic about a future, it is, this wonderful organization.

We're refining our revision processes, whether whether they're you know, small revisions or whether it's large scale revisions, we're learning from this, and we're refining them, so when we, go again you know, people will be more up to speed, uh, we will as well more empathetic of what's needed, what enables us to move quickly and increase our productivity, but also make sure.

We uh keep on top of what is really the jewel in the crown, which is quality of service with these centralising the decision making because that holds up people being able to respond on a daily basis.

We've got a trust uh our people, we've got to push that sort of uh autonomy responsibility down within parameters of course, but so in in all of our workplaces, and there's so many of them on a daily decision on a daily basis decisions have to be made, and we've got to free people up, and we've got to trust them for the managers and the unions to work together within the right parameters, and to make some of those decisions that you know, they'll have, the uh, the the the power and the autonomy to make those decisions to make sure we maintain quality of service to make sure, we're doing the job as we should be doing it.

We will step up, these are revisions we're trying to refine the ones that are already gone in with driving resourcing in recruitment, we will get ourselves in the best possible position, but what we've got more than anyone else, this we have still got a massive vocational sense of purpose amongst postal workers, and I know they will step up they're terrific people.

I know the text needs tidied up, but I love the fact it's picked up on how many times he says "uh", has interpreted people as "paper" due to the thick accent and my personal favourite "israeli the journal in the crown" which I figure should read as 'is really the jewel in the crown'.

Um... Little Words Can Signal Big Lies... You Know

Words such as "um" and "uh" indicate cognitive load, which liars often experience.

Little words, often ignored in normal speech, can signal deception.

Words such as um and uh indicate cognitive load. Liars experience increased cognitive load.

The tag words such as You know, I mean, and right are used to seek confirmation, convey information, or to convince listeners. Truthful people convey information and seek confirmation from listeners. Liars try to convince others that what is being said is true.

Um and Uh
Um and uh signal impending delays is speech. Liars need time to evaluate their answers to ensure their lies will be believed. Liars also need additional time to choose the right words to camouflage the truth. Truthful people do not need extra time to convey information. Truthful people narrate information in a smooth logical fashion.

Increased um and uh usage indicates an increased cognitive load. Since liars need additional time to process information, they typically use um and uh more frequently. Um predicts a longer impending speech delay than does uh. Therefore, um may be a better predictor of deception than uh.

You know
Speakers use you know as a device to determine if listeners understand what is being said. You know also establishes a closer connection between speakers and listeners. In other words, speakers move psychologically closer to listeners to ensure their message is received and properly understood. People tend to draw closer to things and people they like. Truthful people are comfortable bringing others into their narratives because they have nothing to hide.

does this f***ing bloke actually listen to his members and what they are telling him ? , revisions have pushed some offices backwards and the customer quality of service is shite , so how can you be happy with that , can you honestly say at looking around your office with parcels left , full deliverys left everyday that you actually are proud to work for this s**t show .

Might be time for an actual member of the CWU Executive to leave their Ivory Tower and visit an actual workplace and speak to those they represent of course the company has done well during a pandemic. Work loads have doubled whilst staffing levels have remained more or less the same and yet Royal Mail still only have a 6 percent increase in profits that shows there is something inherently flawed in its structure. The CWU should be rioting in the streets not backslapping themselves on helping the deluded CEO in his rush to get rid of the Universal Service and become just another Courier company

Will only get worse. Will customers bother actually buying a first class stamp now knowing now that nothing is getting delivered in time unless its tracked or specials ? Thats all in the big plan though drive the service down etc.

afraid we are stuck with the ostrich unless people start cancelling their subs in droves, something that isn't advised in the current climate,
given his last few years reign, it's been a catastrophe by him & his team starting with the planned IA before the virus which would make a good carry-on script, & now he's hell bent on kissing the newer CEO's ass ignoring all the issues by our unions members raised and clearly stating most of are scared of change and their way is better
it's a total mess in our d/o and it looks like it's similar or worse in most others

anyway, rant over, few days off, chill with my (adult) kids, a beer & the match & maybe more beers and finish off with a curry to try make the place smell nicer on my return

I believe this Business needs to revisit the whole level of staffing... across the board. EVERYONE is crying out for more staff but RM are shitting themselves in case they recruit people they may not have enough work for.

When was the last time you saw anyone standing around without any work to do (excluding Managers). This job is just becoming undeliverable with the ammount of staff we have. You just can't keep cutting & cutting. Look on the bright side Terry if RM had to employ a few thousand more Posties.... that's more members for you!

It's getting to the stage that I may very well vote against ANYTHING the CWU propose on the basis that EVERY deal they push is totally crap for it's members.
