What's with the weird start/end times?

Maybe this isn't the same all over, and if that's the case I'm about to out my location...

Any reason start and end times are not exactly on the hour, or even 5 minute intervals?

Longs and shorts mean the hours have to add up over a 6 week period.

When I 1st got the job years ago my start time on collections was I think, 11:49 or some silly arse number, the interviewer said yep, it's a bit weird but it works.

When I started as a Cadet in 1987, it was a 43 hour, 6 day week. 0600 - 1348 Mon - Fri. 0600 - 1000 Sat.

Doms are very clever when it comes to working things to their advantage, especially when it comes to their budgets. If for example your start time is 0800 then the chances are (as long as you don't come in early) that you will come in on time 0800. But if the start time is say 0758 then the chances are you will start at 0755, meaning that you are giving them 3 minutes. The same with the finish time, if your finish time is 1430 and you finish at 1445 you will book 15 minutes, if your finish time is 1428 and you work to 1445 you will still only book 15 minutes giving them a further 2 minutes. All of a sudden add both figures together and your giving them 5 minutes a day, let's go further, those 5 minutes a day over the 6 days is 30 minutes, over the month its 2 hours, over the year its 24 hours. Which is more or less the equivalent to a part time 25 hour contract. And that's just one worker imagine how much time it is if all the workers in a delivery office did the same

Likely this reason. We have ridiculous start and finish times at our which differ every day. People are less likely to claim for the odd bit here and there as they most don't know what the f is going on. And when they do they round down from 1 hour 3 mins to 1 hour etc.

Likewise I’m convinced the weird times are so we don’t claim. Just like those of us on 4 day weeks are expected to do 9 minutes extra for free if we follow their start and finish times - I’m on a 29 hour contract, if I come in at the time I’m told to start, and finish at finish time, I work 29 hours and 9 minutes. Incompetence or intentional?

I just play upper management at their own game by having 2 minutes longer for break, come back a minute early etc. Will be a little harder once clocking in machines are installed.

Its also designed to confuse staff when it comes to working out their overtime in the hope that they will write it down wrong.


For example, 07.13 to 15.05. I've seen many staff standing there counting on their fingers trying to work it out?? lol

I look forward to Monday and Tuesday as it's 7.10 start and 7.15 respectively, an extra hour in bed.
I was asked to come in for an hour's overtime the other week, most of the office were already in working for nothing.
Its something I've never got my head round in 40 years.

I thought the start and finishing times were weird. It all makes sense now. How corrupt is this company?! Robbing hard working posties of a few minutes here and there everyday to make savings! Wow. Just wow. How cynical. How pathetic.
