Hi, how does seniority work when applying for vacant duties?

A number of duties have been advertised, we could apply for them, listing them in order of preference, 1 to 10 etc.

For example, someone with seniority applies for a duty as his 3rd preference. Do they lose out if someone with less seniority has it as their 1st preference?

Assuming the person with more seniority doesn’t get either of their first 2 choices they will get the duty over anyone with less seniority. What preference it is doesn’t come into it.
