Driving test?

Post by Jmartindale130 »

Week 2 on the job!

Really enjoying it so far, been following in car again and doing loops with somebody, got a spare van key so I can get my bag loaded up if he isn't back to the van

Was supposed to be my day off tomorrow, but a manager came over to me and told me my driving test for van is tomorrow at 5AM, what can I expect?

I don't really understand why I need to do a test to drive a van?

But what does the test involve?

Cheers

The test should be in works time surely - and a sensible time at that

5am on yer day off sounds really unreasonable
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Test is usually set out in two parts, theory & practical. You will be with your assessor maybe watching a video and going through very very basics questions to do with driving a vehicle. This should take up to and hour.
After this you will get a van to be assessed in , where you will be asked to open bonnet , maybe give brief check that you know what is what. Then you will be assessed whilst driving van, and probably be informed on which directions to go from your assessor. If you are a competent driver you will breeze through it.
After i believe you are given an overall score to ascertain how safe your driving is. Just follow basics, check mirrors , brake softly, accelerate softly, check blindspots.
And Good Luck

Years ago as long as you didn't hit anything on a jolly round the local roads with the examiner you were passed (mind you one guy did reverse into a wall back in the yard and he was passed)

A little tip, make sure you can see the rear tyres of the vehicle in front when stopped, that way you know you are the right distance for the test. I know this as I got pulled for it on my test!

do it with all new starters at ours so they don't lose a shift out of it, and always the crack of dawn, once the bloke & the examiner were the 1st there waiting!
they daren't say no in case the dom will think you're a trouble causer
easy overtime if you want it though

It's training on how to drive and use the vehicle, how to refuel it, how to check the oil......ect... its not really a test as you can't fail it unless something serious happens. Your just graded red,Amber, green and the real purpose of it is for royal mail to save millions on insurance premiums. Your boss is taking advantage as no trainer starts before 7am so why he would say 5am and on your day off beggers belief.
