I usually start about 25 to 30 mins early. 25 mins extra in bed is more appealing but I get a lift into work and I can't control the time I get there. Since I've got the time I might as well prep my walks. Like 95% of the duties in the office the duty doesn't take anything like the 8 hours I'm paid for each day so I'm giving myself a slightly earlier finish than I would by starting on time. Holding off until 5:30 wouldn't prove anything. There's an 'efficiency plan' ongoing in the office and the manager wants to implement it shortly. If I think that my new duty will take me longer than 8 hours (minus 40 mins meal relief) you can bet I'll be working to my hours. Other postman should note that just because some people start before their time doesn’t necessarily mean they're being walked over...........though obviously many are.

Work to your time now, I've been doing it for weeks now and it feels good (it is much less stressful than running around trying to get finished early)

Everyone should work to the duty's contrcted hours, trust me you will feel much happier/less stressed than if you come in early and run around.

If I have ever got in early I have a coffee and a chat but would never start until my contracted hours. If you start doing them favours they come to expect it. Anyways, has anyone ever seen a gaffer in early? - although I have seen them leave early!

When they start paying me overtime for coming in early, then I'll do it!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
