We’ve been told todays that Monday and Tuesday we are to start at 6am, get out as soon as possible and once we finish we can go home no matter how early we are. If it goes to a red weather warning (which it just has) then we won’t be going out at all. That’s our office anyway, no doubt everywhere will be different.
Can't see how any office can get out any earlier unless none of the wave 2 stuff (inc SDs and Tracked) goes out. Even the nearest DOs to us probably don't get their wave 2 stuff in till about 07:00, probably 08:00-08:30 for the DOs furthest away
Really ? are you trying to wind up delivery posties. Every time something like this is mentioned you seem to put getting the work out of MCs as more critical than H&S.

The safety of people is MORE important than whether the mail gets there or not. Please try and think before you post such insensitive replies.

Obviously there's nothing stopping them advancing deliveries on Monday, mailcentre dispatch times are irrelevant.

Tuesday might be slightly different but given the lighter workload on a Monday night it is perfectly reasonable to investigate the possibility of advancing the work during the night even if it means extra staff.

This whole "can't be done" thing is nonsense, I'm pretty sure it's not that challenging if the motivation is there to do it.

We had a meeting re Mon/Tues; Even though the red alert weather warning has already been issued, our DOM won’t be making a decision until Monday morning “when they’ll have a better idea”!! He asked us to come in early - 4.30 - but this is optional. I don’t think many people went for it. He said up until 11am it’s not too hot, suggesting we may be sent out for a few hours! But the best part was still to come…even though our office clearly falls in the red alert area he apparently had a more detailed weather map that allegedly suggests our postcode area won’t be as hot as surrounding areas!!!! You can’t make this s**t up. RM really don’t give a f**k about their staff…as long as you get those tracks and specials done, and if you have a heart attack whilst doing it then so be it.

RM know they are going to get a big 'Yes' vote this week so it is no surprise to me they are treating us like this. Strikes coming up and money for the precious share holders under threat, they were always going to shove us out the door on Monday and Tuesday with the usual 'take precautions' spiel and hope for the best. Profit before H+S.

· For any geographical area that has a Red weather warning the Met Office website should be checked and during the time that the hourly temperature indicates Red (35 degrees C or above) all outdoor operational activity must be suspended.

we agreed this - with Dave Joyce @ CWU - after a long discussion

What are the odds that Joyce wanted a lower temperature?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Ditto
Come in at 5 and do your hours get out early. Leave 2nd wave.
Many cannot make it at 5am.
Ok, go out and see how you feel.
That was from an area conference call.
That was the big announcement.
Many people aghast that we will be out on Monday and Tuesday in the heat.
Very bad today. Two days mail. Was offered water , ice-cream etc by some, moaned at by another as he had to wait for the post. A look shut him up.
I told them all straight that RM do not give a toss about us.
And they don't.

It's a ridiculously simplistic cut off point.
5 hours outdoor work at 34C is okay then?
People could die posting pizza menus, how do you justify that s**t to their family?

It's obviously going to be unbearably hot anyway but is anywhere predicted to be above the magical 35° before 1pm?

There's going to be people walking further away from the office with a HCT as the day heats up. Collections will probably be the hardest hit as it is predicted be above 35° in lots of areas come late afternoon

So if it gets higher than 34c you are allowed to return to office? Anywhere this is official?

Is that 35 actually taken in direct sunlight because that is what we will be working in, or as I suspect the shade temperature taken from some website?

as all weather forecasts it's in the shade, do 1 side am, the other side pm :left:
honestly these 2 days could be more a threat than the entire covid period where it didn't even exist within rm buildings

I guess 34 degrees or less is under the MET Office Amber Warning and when it goes over 35 degrees it is a Red Warning.

So the decision does make sense.

You aren't going to be expected to rush around, so take your time, have breaks. If you are feeling awful at anytime then stop, come back.... Is my own thinking.

At the end of the day it's going to be as hot as any conditions we've worked in earlier this Summer up to 11am or midday. We might be working in some pretty hot conditions for about 1 hour before we can come back.
