The only obligation is for RM to deliver them, so long as a way could be found to ensure that the leaflets were delivered then in theroy you could opt out.

It would be similar to BNP leaflets, RML have to deliver them but individuals can opt out within the terms of the RML/CWU agreement on opting out.

You could ask RML for a opt out and if they refuse go to employment tribunal. I doubt the CWU would support you as the legal bods would proably declare you of having less than 50% chance of winning.

It MAY have been feasible to opt out under the present system as there is always someone who needs the money more.
but when they go into workload it will be almost impossible.
You can't give away part of your daily workload on ethical grounds.
If environmental ethics are that important to you i would suggest a different career path. :hmmmm
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Here's 1 for the Enviromentilist's - SHOULDN'T EVERY LETTER SENT THROUGH THE POST BE MADE TO HAVE A RETURN ADDRESS ESPECIALLY IF IT FROM A BUSINESS, THUS SAVING PAPER.. THUS SAVING SOME POOR OLE' TREES IN THE PROCESS.. but then again how much PROFIT do Royal Mail make from Mail without a return address as a know my Gone Away's go throw the roof some times and if the GOVERNMENT our SHARE-HOLDER was really that serious about saving the enviroment with all the bullsh*t and scare mongering that we constantly hear you'd think it'd be done years ago!!

Why the obssession that to cut down one single tree is terrible, there is so much more to enviroment issues than trees. Growing/planting trees and not using raniforest sourced wood is the key to making paper based products, not just mail sustainable. Sometimes its not what you do but the way you do it.

RM dont make profit through RTS without return address on the evelope, how you ever had a surcharge for items that come back in a RM envelope from the returns centre?

However a return addess as mandatory on postings from big buissness whether its full access or down steam access is a good idea as it could save money, through not having to use a new envelope on item that arer RTS but senders details are inside the envelop on the item of mail inside..

Strange logic....No, that doesn't make RM any profit, it costs, as it means more handling/processing for no extra money.
Why don't you just argue to go totally paperless if you're so concerned about it? Then we could all sit at home and watch daytime TV.... :crazy: :roll:

Roy Mayall wrote:At last, someone who agrees with me on this. Junk mail is anything that people do not ask for and which goes straight into the bin. There are a number of euphemisms for it: "unsolicited mail", "unaddressed mail", "d2d", "household" and one I heard on radio 4 this week, "discretionary mail". It's all rubbish and it should be illegal, and whatever Royal Mail or the union say about it, a mail company that relies on it for their profit is failing in its business. We should be starting a campaign to have it banned. If you don't know the name of a person living in a house you shouldn't be shovelling mail through their letterbox. Period. The union should be fighting for a proper living wage for its members without the need to fall back upon this antisocial and environmentally damaging trade. Spot on brother. Unfortunately a lot of our workmates seem to want to set fire to their roof's to keep warm. The education system ain't what it used to be. Is that an accident? :hmmmm

valute wrote:Given the deteriorating state of the environment I find it really disturbing delivering junk mail. Whatever arrives in my own letterbox gets recycled immediately. Whenever I buy Radio Times, the first thing I do is hold it up by its cover and empty all the junk straight into the recycling bin. I have a sign on my door saying No Junk Mail. Recycling is just the tip of the iceberg that needs to be done. I may not do much for the environment, but I do try to work towards a better relationship with it. Yet as a postman, delivering D2Ds, I become an active polluter. I hate doing this. And all of us together pollute massively - tons and tons and tons every day!

Do we have to deliver D2Ds? Is there a legal basis for this? Does anyone know whether we have the right to refuse? What would happen if we said, I'm doing this for the environment, and refused to deliver D2Ds?
And I know every little bit counts, but since one year on we are looking at a single power station going oops and spewing out six trillion becquerels of radioactive pollution some of which will remain lethal for 280,000 years ,perhaps we should focus?PS ,me ,I'm avoiding anything Japanese and anything that comes out of the Pacific ocean :Sick

At my office they go into a big skip with the cardboard york inserts and any other paper based stuff. That skip then gets replaced every couple of days.

Possibly - part of the Royal Mail Door to Door T&Cs says http://www.royalmail.com/marketing-serv ... conditions" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
