Geniue question because I don't know the answer but couldn't RM relieve itself from the Postal Service Act once their initial obligation expires? They obviously aren't tied to it until the end of time

No. The Postal Services Act isn't a contract that RM can opt out of regardless of whether their takeover commitments expire.
I'm 100% not saying what you said is not true but what is the legal terms that hold RM/IDS or any private company to provide a service which they claim isn't viable
If they did ask the Government to take over mail deliveries how could you ever split RM up when every office has deliveries mail and packets, it's not like PF do all the packets and RM just the letters? On town duties you maybe able to remove the oversized to PF but the rural duties would be massive undertaking, as you'd need one additional PF driver for every 2 duties plus new offices/larger offices as their base

People, and I include myself in this, think that RM will continue as it has done since it's existence. We are clearly in very different times both socially and technology wise. Where there is a profit to be made a solution will be found

They’d have to rebrand every single part of the company because there’d be no royal charter and I’d assume that would cost a fair bit.
Royal Mail has neither Royal Charter nor Royal Warrant - and never has had either.
It has a coat of arms, which has changed from time to time, and it's allowed for historic reasons to retain 'Royal' in its title.
Allowed by who ?
A very good question.

After the disestablishment of the GPO, The Post Office was, like the BBC, a statutory corporation - created by legislation. I would guess the name and symbols of the company are detailed in the Post Office Act 1969 were it not for 1) the name/entity 'Royal Mail' didn't resurface until circa 1986 when the organisation was restructured and 2) the Cruciform wasn't introduced until 1990, for which royal permission had to be sought to amend the existing logotype.
Any Questions?
Yeah, how do I get out of this chickenshit outfit?

The government.

Thatcher's government created Royal Mail Letters, Royal Mail Parcels, Post Office Counters and the Girobank out of the old Post Office when they sold off BT in 1986.

So a government could take that away too.

Royal mail certainly shouldn't be allowed to use the Royal bit in the name as there's nothing Royal about it. Also as they hate mail then they should lose that to, so I now pronounce the new name

as......................
Catchy isn't it.

RM would need to be completely rid of the USO for that to happen (which is not a boardroom decision) and the irony is that RM's entire competitive advantage over their competitors is their UK network - the fact that they already go to every door! It's a conundrum that the thing that limits RM commercially is also the thing that gives it a structural advantage over its competitors.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
