It’s the resource model/method that is being spoken about as not suitable everywhere not the reform changes
We will be delivering second class every other day no matter what but the union isn’t supporting the 3 into 4 model to do that
You’ll notice that piece says “whatever the agreed resource model is….”
The resource model is what’s still being negotiated
It’s not up for debate that we will continue to work exactly the same and deliver 2nd class every day - some people seem to be under that impression but you can’t really blame them
because the communication has been poor and overly complicated
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next
Martin Walsh when are you going represent your wage paying members and inform these members about any plans / decisions being made on their dehalves. Ie start doing the job your paid to to !
The union are saving face. They know full well Royal Mail will get their own way eventually. I can't honestly say whether the pilots are working or not because my office isn't one but from reading between the lines there have been more than a few niggles. What bothers me is mail is quiet, it's summer and mail is always quiet at this time of year so even double mail is not "that" bad. When it comes to September the mail picks up, more brochures and general rubbish which means double mail won't look quite as "doable" as it does right now, how will the pilots fair then? What happens over Xmas when single mail already looks horrendous?
The next step is that RM will introduce flexible working where you will probably have to complete your day, probably written into new contracts. I've already heard that RM will more than likely have yearly revisions so when mail drops off further we will be looking on the lines of 3 posties to 5 duties. This change is just the start of a series of changes and they will move a lot quicker than they have done in the past. The word "fatigue" is a smokescreen. Harder work 12 months of the year is just around the corner. RM is a business and these owner will want to squeeze 150% out of us.
The Union bringing up 'fatigue' sells this change as looking after the workforce when RM's long term play is likely to be the exact opposite. Managers are always under pressure to get the workloads delivered, regardless of the fall in mail volumes, and with less staff in future it could mean that we are being squeezed. The point about Autumn and winter pressure is valid buy hey that's what the seasonal variations are for, right?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
So what, they can do as they like, you have contracted hours and you do not have to go beyond that. Yes, it will mean more battles with management but that’s part if their end game. Stand your ground.

“ that's what the seasonal variations are for, right?”. - Thought they’ve been stopped?

In an ideal world posties shouldn't really be having any battles with management over working past their contracted hours. But you can be sure that managers will start using performance metrics and conduct procedures once the work isn't regularly being completed. We have had posties in the past who have been sacked for "wilful delay" due to rare lapses in following the overrunning procedure. Without a strong, collective pushback and a union ready to defend their stance every single time then longer days and heavier workloads will be normalised.
