It's a disease this job.
Get out before it becomes terminal. :wave
The balance, of course, is between:

a) having a stable life, albeit a dull one, where money is taken care of and the future, whilst linear, is secure

and

b) having an unstable life, albeit a lively one, where tomorrow may never come and the future, whilst insecure, is non-linear

Most men have adventure in their soul, but it is eked out slowly and excruciatingly in the daily grind. Before you know it, you're old, worn out, with an ugly wife and horrible kids, and all the things you should have done are no longer maybes, they're just regrets. Am I more likely to regret leaving Royal Mail, or not seeing a bit of the world when I was young and virile enough to enjoy it? I think we all know the answer to that one.

And yet, I delay and delay, for some rainier day, where all hope is gone. Does that make me a coward?

No it makes you normal

We all (well anyone who thinks) gets this way from time to time. I don’t think the job helps much with its same thing every day and its low social status. Normally something horrid happens to someone you know and you realise your not so bad off after all. Bit brutal but true

Hence;

“Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control.......…”

So yeah, days are getting worse. I'm getting very close indeed to that point where I throw in the towel and wander off into the sunset. I've been eyeing up a year's travel around Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. There's a deep and hostile restlessness stirring within me. What to do, what to do. Is there any worse fate than being stuck in the same cycle, ad nauseam?

I don't think there is. I think we all live in our own personal hell, mostly because we let ourselves.
If you are debt free and have bit of money in the bank and no dependence, and why not work until end of summer then go on a 12-18 months round the world trip, as we might get a bonus by then (Hopefully).

The human condition so beautifully summed up in the poetry of Joe Strummer. (I'm sure Billy would agree)

Now every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world,
Ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl.
Love 'n hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands,
Hands that slap his kids around, 'cause they don't understand how,

Death or glory, becomes just another story.

Yes it's a bank holiday but we are stuck at home with the ugly wife and the horrible kids wondering where it all went wrong. :Very Happy

That's kind of been my rationale so far. I'm keeping the money as tight as possible, living within my means. I owe nothing to anybody and have plenty in reserve. I want to see the world - not because I want to get away but because it's always been an ambition of mine. And I don't think I'll ever be in this position again, i.e.; young, debt-free, financially able, without any ties to other people in terms of marriage and/or dependent children. All I have is the rent. Plus we're due another revision payment - I'm not optimistic that it will ever come, but if it does, it would be nice to get it, bank it, and f*ck off.

Attractive wife and nice kids, then!

Either way I don't look forward to a time when sex is a Sunday ritual at best.

Royal Mail "used" to offer a 12 month career break where you took the time un-paid but your job was kept open. You could not take another job within that time though.

A fellow single postie took a year off and went on a artic sailing voyage. The photo's of the icebergs were breath taking. It done hime the world of good and he came back very positive.

This was around 10 years back and iam not sure if they still offer this kind of thing. :hmmmm

They don't. A former colleague of mine went off to South America and loved it. He speaks Spanish. He taught Engligh there, loads of places take people that are NOT actually qualified, but have it as a first language. Anyway he arrived back juat as or after the last dispute/ strike. Then he left for good. RM have removed this option of keeping jobs open as far as I know. Probably a way of saving money and to be fair it makes sense in a way. Sad but true.

Glad we are not the only ones who do that then. :left:

We have the hub and the tv aerial amp (in the loft) on one of those remote radio switches and when we want something done CLICK off it all goes and they soon come running out to complain quick enough. :nana
