At the end of the day this business has a relatively high turnover of staff especially in the first 6 months of employment. That's with a relatively high rate of pay on entry. You can imagine what it would be like on minimum wage.
When i started in 1963 you did Not Get Full Rate Of Pay Until You Were 28
That's because you had to learn to drive the coach and horses first... :left:... only kidding.

Assuming you started as a telegram boy at 16 that makes you 73-ish, it must bring a tear to your eye to see the state of the company now.

Even when I started which was a lot later than '63 there was no retention issue even though the pay was poor because it was considered a good secure full-time job for life with a great pension.

There is a problem retaining part time staff.
There doesn't appear to be too much of a problem recruiting or retaining full time staff.

Consequently there should be no RRIS payment for full time staff and double for part time staff.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

There is also the problem of seeing Jobs as Advertised as being 9 am (ish) - 2 pm ( ish ) , 25 Hrs , ideal for dropping off & picking up the children from school , only to find if you get the job those are not the hour,s your expected to work

From what I've observed, many people leave very quickly after joining because they find out how poorly managed Royal Mail is. They might have been given a 12 hour contract, but then are confused why they are on the rota every week for 38 hours anytime from 6am - 16:00 Monday to Saturday.

Many companies in the UK are dysfunctional, but Royal Mail is exceptionally strange. This is now a typical advert:

Part time 25:00 hours per week
Working between the hours of 07:00 and 19:00
Five days across Monday to Saturday
One day off during the week (rotational day off)

What they don't mention is that, you won't get a rotational day off (it will be completely random). And you'll get the rota maybe on the Saturday before the week starts. So you'll literally need to remain free from 7:00 - 19:00 Monday to Saturday every week, because they'll expect you to work those 25 hours, anytime within that period, that suits them. Actually, no you'll be on the rota for at least 38 hours, without being asked if you want the extra every week. And if you raise this as an issue, you'll need to be prepared to raise it every single week.

If you have literally any other commitments, you're screwed if you get a job with Royal Mail.
and the 'rotational day off' will never be a saturday

The hours thing is the key, in my opinion. Who is gonna commit to 24 hours over 5 or 6 days? Unless your spose is the primary earner or you're a single parent whose income will be boosted by benefits, then you ain't gonna be able to do it. That effects the quality of those who apply, in my opinion. Or if the new starts are any good they quickly move on for more hours.

That's all you get in our office currently.. Apart from the longer term cover duty holders, all the others have Saturday now. Even some duty holders have permanent saturdays currently.

100% agree this should be a thing, and I rarely drive for RM. Maybe this could be funded in part by heavily reducing or completely getting rid of (or at the very least reviewing) the workplace coach role

People get their hours increased quite regularly at my DO. We have people with less than 5yrs service on 35hr contracts who started out on 25/30hrs
