Posties - how do you feel about your job?
I think the "I love the job but hate management" option would be very popular here were it available! From personal experience, it can vary from office to office. I previously worked in a smaller market-town DO before getting transferred to a large one in a city and the notice the difference very quickly.......

Id go back to one man on delivery and finish in a shot .after 20 odd years my body is shot, get home too exhausted to do anything , drag myself out if bed body still aching n sore . Back to the grind ,the lies , the patronising , arguements every day , backstabbers , brown nosers. Stress sick absence miles worse than it was yrs ago , managers with no ppl skills . Pdas awful, vans falling apart but get patched up badly , conduct code conduct code, work place coaches paid every week for doing nothing ,uniforms not fit for purpose , faves looked after , have i missed anything? Hate the way the company is now .

I feel your pain Chelsea, quite literally. I'm not looking forward to the day they tell us they want to increase the delivery span again. I just can't get my head around the people who want to fly round duties in this day and age. Can they not see the damage they're doing? Yes, as well as management we have to work with management pleasers who it seems will do anything to earn their little brownie points and assure their place in the pecking order. Hopefully some of them somewhere may read this and a little lightbulb may go on in their skulls. I'm forever hopeful.Chelseablue wrote:Id go back to one man on delivery and finish in a shot .after 20 odd years my body is shot, get home too exhausted to do anything , drag myself out if bed body still aching n sore . Also, it's not just our own doing it. The amount of other couriers I've seen actually RUNNING beggars belief. This is what we're up against also.

I know it’s that time of year and it could also be an age thing but I’m feeling really worn down by the job at the moment. If they honestly think they can make these delivery’s any longer my time is up, the amount of new starters we have been through this year also tells you we are already at our limits, we never went through staff that quick years ago. The pen pushers should try doing the job for a couple of weeks and see what they then think.

Aye, they may be able to run round a few loops and think no problem. But not every day, year after year. You wouldn't make Usain Bolt do a marathon would you?Grumpyoldmailman wrote:I know it’s that time of year and it could also be an age thing but I’m feeling really worn down by the job at the moment. I also fear when you hear the bigwigs say there will be a job for everyone who wants a job, what they actually mean is we are going to make the job so long and hard a lot of you won’t want the job so u will leave.

Exactly what I thought when I heard that statement. "It's a job captain, but not as we know it....."Grumpyoldmailman wrote:I also fear when you hear the bigwigs say there will be a job for everyone who wants a job, what they actually mean is we are going to make the job so long and hard a lot of you won’t want the job so u will leave.

SSDD - agree with you here, similar to when you hear a manager say 'I've covered that round, and I ripped round it in half the time, what's your problem?'ssdd wrote:Aye, they may be able to run round a few loops and think no problem. but they only do it for a day (and there's normally two of them) in an emergency and the frame looks like a rubbish tip, missorted letters,
misdeliveries handed back by customers, bags chucked all over the place, 739's and laggy bands strewn all over the place, random packets just left on the frame, redirection wallets scattered, D2D's not done, wagon not refuelled etc.......

I have only been in the job a year and I get home too exhausted to do anything. Drag my body out of bed still aching and sore. But my office doesn't sound as bad as yours for all the politics.Chelseablue wrote:Id go back to one man on delivery and finish in a shot .after 20 odd years my body is shot, get home too exhausted to do anything , drag myself out if bed body still aching n sore . It is 5pm on a Saturday and I need to go to bed, knackered. I don't see the point in me doing this job much longer....I just work...get 1 day off which is a recovery day to rest aches and pains and sleep, then work several days, then 1 day off recovery, back to work.....do I want to be doing this until 60+.....

I regularly bump into walkers while I'm out Delivering. They'll often say "You've got a Nice Job out walking in the Fresh Air, how far do you have to walk? Me and the wife like a bit of walking"ssdd wrote:

Then I explain "I do that 5 days a week ... then next week I'll do it again ... and the week after that .... then next month .... then the month after that .... then next year I'll do it all again.... It works out about 2000 miles a year"!
Kind of puts your 100 mile walking holiday in perspective doesn't it? Plus I don't expect you go out for a walk when it's blowing a gale and pissing down.
Like all Wage Slaves, he had two crosses to bear: The people he worked for and the people he worked with! (Stephen Vizinczey.)

They look at you as if to say That's not Much.

They probably think we just stroll around.
They don't realise that most of the time we are clock watching and under pressure to finish in our times as most of us don't want to go over. Therefore it's stressful as we are rushing a lot.
If everyday was like a typical Tuesday/Saturday then it would be quite pleasant as these days you generally don't have to clock watch and can take a more leisurely stroll. But for me, 3 or 4 days of the week I need to keep moving at a decent pace to get done within time.

Same here, after doing 3/4/5 days in a row i am totally exhausted, often needing a 2 hour afternoon sleep in order to stay up past 8pm. Im often doing 11/12 miles walking per day and climbing 60/70 flights of stairs (according to iphone health app). Its just insane, and as a 36 year old its worrying how little energy im left with outside of work, and how my body feels; neck and shoulder pain, feet a total wreck. Cant see myself being able to do this job into my forties and beyond. It should not be this way.norris9 wrote:I have only been in the job a year and I get home too exhausted to do anything.
