Fishtank.

"I know this Iraqi bloke who cannot read English let alone speak English"
Ok, lets start censoring and leave out his nationality
"I know this bloke who cannot read English let alone speak English"
This would then clear up the sex/nationality of the person but then is it racist to use 'English' if Iraqi is not acceptable What has the posters nationality got to do with this?
"I know someone who cannot read or speak"
Hmm, but are there not disability laws that covers this? This now sounds like a disability!
"I know someone"
Settled....... That's how stupid it can get.

Your missing the point IPS relevance.
His nationality is irrelevant and is only in the sentence as a "tag" to provoke a reaction.
Time for a bit of honesty IPS.

The Nationality might be a 'tag' to provoke a reaction at the very most but it is far from being racist. Saying something along the lines of "Like ALL Iraqi's, this bloke I know can't speak or read English IS racist. The poster did not say that though.

That's certainly my understanding of the situation anyway.

"A bit of honesty" would admit that it's a human characteristic to differentiate in this way.
{"He's the big bloke/ginger bloke/black bloke/one-legged bloke by the door over there"}
Hardly a "tag to provoke a reaction"....
The problem only comes if that person is denigrated in some way for having those same characteristics, which is another thing entirely.

IPS . " Saying something along the lines of "Like ALL Iraqi's, this bloke I know can't speak or read English IS racist." I would say that is obvious and factual as Iraqi is the natural language for a Iraqi same as French is is the natural language for the French . So I would not expect the majority of the people from them countries would speak English ,

{"He's the big bloke/ginger bloke/black bloke/one-legged bloke by the door over there"}

Well tman if there were two blokes over at the door it would be descriptive and relevant.
If there was just one it would be a "tag" and irrelevant but either way his nationality would always be irrelevant.
He's the Iraqi bloke by the door does sound rather dodgy doesn't it.
But then you are well aware of this tman. :cuppa

Racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race

I am?
How about if there's another Iraqi by the window?

"Which one do I need to see?"
"Try the Iraqi by the door".

So, that sounds "dodgy" does it?

You make it sound dodgy, by insinuating that being an Iraqi is somehow shameful, and not to be spoken about.

{As if positions were reversed, the Iraqi posties wouldn't refer to you as "the British bloke"... :crazy: }
