I want people to talk me down, and I will graciously admit defeat if/when my own reasoning runs out of steam. What will fail to persuade me however is jeering from one side or the other. I am on neither side, I'm just walking the line down the middle and listening to both sides while I make up my mind, delivering mail as I go. Surely there is enough room in here for me? Don't think that there are only two sides to the dispute, there is at least one other and I fall into that category. I am still in shock at the decision to strike, because I was ready to take on the workload and put myself to the test. I am struggling daily to complete my round, striking was not an option for me however. I was ready to grow into my duty, to raise my game, thinking 'Sh!t, this is tough, but come on, I can do it', but now the majority have ruled that I will never be given that chance to prove myself. I am having to take a step backwards and assess the situation, and I felt that I needed to take soundings from others who were perhaps better prepared to deal with it.

So, here's a chance for anyone who wishes to lay it on thick and get off their chest the reasons why they are striking (or not!), and to perhaps relate that to what sort of a postie they think that makes them. It might even be a morale boost to realise that you are not half as bad a postie as you thought you were upon reflection, or after reasoning you may realise that your actions or decisions turn out to make you less of the postie you thought you were. :hmmmm

After all this time you still don't know what both sides of the argument are? It all stems from the 2007 pay and modernization agreement go read up on it would be here all night typing it out for you.

In your own little dream world you might think that you are on neither side, crossing a picket line suggests otherwise.

Had a thought or two while out on duty today - don't know about you guys, but I'm finding it difficult to concentrate at work just now.

I may get shot down in flames for this, but again if you don't agree please don't shout at me, reason with me.

Perhaps posties longer in the tooth than I hark back to a time when the job was more important and less under threat, with less need for cut-backs in staff and a re-scheduling of delivery times. And perhaps as a result there is frustration in the hearts of good posties who see their job (and all that past strikes have fought for) declining or at worst adapting to meet the needs of customers. Are these good and decent posties taking out their frustrations in the only way they can? I wonder if this strike hopes to reverse this decline. Is the decline all down to bad management? Is the role of Royal Mail manager a poison chalice? Perhaps the decline in the postal service as it exists in its present form is terminal? Perhaps both sides of the contest actually want the same thing, change and improvement, and they are blaming each other, when the real cause is out with anyone’s control. Is it that the work force feels that the management could be making better use of time, money and resources to maintain slipping standards of service, yet in actual fact it is the work force's contention that they could be making a better job of managing the crisis; when an objective assessment of the state of play might advise going with the flow and keeping pace with change. In a strange way, is the trouble and disruption caused by the strike somehow proving that there is still a need for a well organised mail service, will a heaving back-log demonstrate that without the postal workers the mail service in this country cannot function? Is there no other way to prove that point, other than aborting the service? Is this strategy not too high risk? Maybe the disagreement has a lot to do with perception of how the company and the work it manages is changing, what is seen as decline to some may be seen as progress to others, and what some term management others term miss-management.

Just a day's idle thoughts.

In relation to earlier replies, if I cannot make up my mind whether to strike or work, then I am no use even to myself, and working or striking makes no difference. I am set to go in tomorrow, but I didn't work last Friday, so by tomorrow afternoon my tally will read 1 strike:1 shift. As for the task of outlining the argument FOR striking being too time consuming, then why not try me on one point at a time?

Well I am a postie. But what 'type' of postie? This is a fast changing thought, but to put it bluntly I think that I am not the type of postie that worries about what the customer thinks of the service. Don't get me wrong, I take pride in my own work, but as long as I am doing what the company asks of me (never easy) then I go home content.
This says it all pal - You don't care about the customer, you just wear blinkers and and want to carry on helping RM run the service the public receives in to the ground. :no no

We ain't gonna let that happen, the customer is our biggest ally, keeping the post public showed that.
Please sir can I have more?

Just a day's idle thoughts.
A tip, if you actually want a constructive and helpful dialoge here stop posting uninteresting, overlong monologues of idle thought. Get to the point with one or two observations and one or two questions.

Don't need to get laid, mind is on the strike at the moment, and very little else.

In this fight, both sides seem to be losing.

Why is no-one on this majority pro-strike website taking my views on? Surely not everyone is simply following orders, there must be someone else out there to whom the choice of strike or don't strike is not an easy one. There are reasons not to strike, and these should be balanced with the reasons for striking. To those whose decision was as close as mine but who chose to go with the strike, please help me to colour the landscape on here, because it doesn't need to be so black-and-white. I guess this stuttering attempt at a discussion is seeking to discuss in general why people choose to strike, perhaps not specifically why a postie might strike. Just because you don't like the job you are being asked to do, that doesn't always lead to strike action. So to anyone who can say more than 'Crozier's a #$!@' or 'Our office is a joke!', why not expand a little on how you came to your final decision.

Or perhaps I've come to the wrong place.

I'LL EXPAND PEEYOURPANTSJAY DON'T HIDE BEHIND ALL THOSE WORDS AND GET SOME BALLS YOU FAGOT!!!!!!!!!

Rules: Please remember everyone is welcome on this site. Customers, CWU Officers, Royal Mail Managers, all Royal Mail employees, the General Public, the press, and even MPs, so please do not resort to abuse if people of a different political persuasion or viewpoint to you, post on a thread.

If someone has a different position to you please respect their right to have differing views, and enjoy yourself when picking holes in their position in a constructive way. We would much rather have a long winded well thought out argument, picking out weak points in someone's position, than have a thread full of 1 line insults.
