Re: 700 jobs 2 go
Given the present DOM and DM roles are disappearing that makes sense? As far as former posties back on the walks that will only happen if the RM lets them return to being posties rather than simply make them redundant and force them to apply for a posties job in the normal manner. Although the RM might find the prospects of saving on redundancy and also future wages to attractive to turn down!

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
Heard the same from afew of them this morning. New roles will be responsible for a certain amount of walks and will be in charge of resourcing them and controlling the budget for them. For most of them I don’t think their CV’s will meet the job description.

Micro managing and ensuring they get every last second of every last minute out if eveyone. While not bothering about the correct equipment being available, because that would cost money.

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
Now if I were of a suspicious mind, I may see a link between a recruitment freeze and then the availability of 700 people to fill a certain number of vacancies
Everything will be OK in the end, If it's not OK, then its not the end.

Add to that the managerial tasks that were recently cut/streamlined.
If I remember, it was well over 100 and cut to a few dozen.

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
So if these new Customer Managers are going to be looking after smaller teams how does that affect our duty structures. E. G. take an office with 3 or 4 manager and they reduce it to 2 and they look after their own section and nothing else surely it's going to mean splitting duties and floats etc up in some offices
Will also affect leave reserves and annual leave planning in bigger units, if you belong to a team and not one unit surely that's going to change too?

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
That's kinda like how it's been in MCs for the last few years with each work area having it's own budget as well as the overall shift budget. A lot of the time the managers create rota sheets so you know who's on what within the area covered by that managerClappedoutpostie wrote: ↑26 Jan 2022, 20:35Heard the same from afew of them this morning. I personally know someone who started off as a Postie .... became a DOM ..... got sacked and busted back to Postie. He then reapplied and became a DOM again!
Like all Wage Slaves, he had two crosses to bear: The people he worked for and the people he worked with! (Stephen Vizinczey.)

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
So many of the things line managers are responsible for could be streamlined.
Just off the top of my head, and I know my office is probably run differently to others, these are the 5 most common reasons I go to manager:
1. To get put on the list for overtime that day. Could so easily be done by you inputting into the PDA the OT needed that day to complete. A team leader or whatever they want to call them could easily just look at his PDA and approve everyone’s OT so you see a tick next to it, if he/she doesn’t (eg you’re booking 6 hours extra or something ridiculous to complete) it’s declined and you have to see the leader ASAP.
2. Telling a line manager I can’t complete and need to work to time. There’s never an argument to be had so why do I need to walk around the office with 4 or 5 others joining the queue of people following a line manager like the pied piper, the PDA shows my work rate, my finish time etc. Why can’t I just take as much as I can do in the time (which I do anyway), prioritise whatever is the flavour of the day (which I do anyway) and the rest is left for OT kings/agency/afternoon staff or just rolls over.
3. Annual leave - come on, we should be able to sort that ourselves via the app by now, seeing the available slots.
4. Being put on a rural I’ve never done. Again it’s not difficult to set up a spread sheet with who knows the rural/business rounds then you never get put on it if you’ve not done it before.
5. To let him/her know that Jane or Bob hasn’t come in for whatever reason and it’s 30mins past their start time. I’ve known management not realise for 2+ hours someone hasn’t come in, it’s really slack. Clocking in machines linked to managers PDA which flags up if someone isn’t in, simples!
I say it a lot but the technology is available, upper management need to start using it.

The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
Smaller teams can only be achieved by reducing OPG numbers. The announcement was clear on afternoon parcel and Sunday managers. The likely outcome of this is Monday to Friday USO with a weekend and weekday afternoon parcel operation.
No day off cover managers with annual leave management cover being absorbed, which with the stampede for VR will easily remove the 700 managers.
This will also involve 20,000 OPG job losses, which when you look at vacancies and attrition it will only take 2 to 3 years to reduce the workforce to that level.
Remember the management reduction has likely come from a consultancy. No way Simon Thompson could come up with such a detailed plan.
Royal Mail is desperate to reduce the frontline wage bill, as this will flow straight through to profits, dividends and the magic £10 share price.
Turbulent times ahead

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
Can't see there being a stampede for VR, from what i hear the terms are very basic.
Talk is a ballot for strike action which if that runs it's course takes place just as RM hope to implement the changes.

Re: 700 jobs 2 go
I think they have had abit more info today, aka “meat on the bone”. Apparently the jobs they can apply for can be anywhere within the postcode area, an office that has been the “home” office won’t necessarily be the one you are at anymore and u should be prepared to travel. There won’t be any shortage of takers on the VR’s and it’s doubtful they will end up on strike. This isn’t just going to have an impact on the managers, anyone who has a friendly relationship with management and gets deals and cushy duty’s from them should be very worried, same goes for the ones who ridiculously drag jobs out for extended overtime as well. Times are about to really change and they will be coming for us next.
