I would imagine all thoughts of DO mergers will be off the table until a post Covid plan is in place.

The last thing the business needs at the moment is more travelling distance to delivery and a requirement for more vehicles.

We should have the choice those who are happy to van share should be able to. Still not long now and we can van share as well as go on holiday to the pub and football.

I wouldn't count your chickens, cases rising across the country makes it difficult to justify going back to van sharing now but not last month and it's likely they'll continue to rise into the autumn/winter.

I think they kind of painted themselves into a corner last month and it's difficult to see a clear way out without just ignoring the data.

The government is in pretty much the same mess, they delayed last month because of rising cases so what now, just ignore rising cases and open up?

Covid is never, ever going to go away, there's always going to be some variant doing the rounds. All the elderly and vulnerable have been vaccinated so Boris needs to bite the bullet and fully open up the country on the 17th. Like it or not, we're all just going to have to learn to live with Covid

Or die with it.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

On my travels I see van sharing, just saying.
I see a lot on my travels, just saying again.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

It's going to take some interesting verbal gymnastics to bring back van share now.
But at the end of the day, the company is still operating and turning a profit plus everything is hunky dory in offices up and down the country, so let's all just crack on....

We are but it’s still obviously going to be a health and safety risk going forward. How long before the ambulance chasing solicitors are all over employers where it can be proven somebody caught Covid at work?

I suspect this will be the main driver (excuse the pub) behind any decision.
What's the business exposure to potential claims?
It may come back as voluntary only, if they get enough takers it might stay that way. Your decision, your risk.

As far as my office is concerned, van share is inefficient,it just doesn’t work in terms of the continuous work the business demands.

Van share has been inefficient since the day it was introduced back in 2012.

Biggest problem I have with van share is the increase in oversized packets. Suddenly the driver is doing two walks and the walker doesn't have to worry about it anymore. Let me guess though, lapsing as usual, managers won't even think about this, half the office has daily moans.

Since last year we're almost back to Single Daily Delivery with dedicated drivers clearing the oversized and dropping bags off (minus the crewbus, the passengers, the pouchboxes). And much as I prefer doing solo duties with pouchboxes, there's no way they'll install the required number of boxes to enable 5 hour deliveries (even if shoebox+ packets are offloaded to dedicated driving duties). The cost benefits and flexibility presumably outweigh the plainly obvious inefficiencies of Park & Loop. All 'bout the money.

There is also the small matter that every revision currently taking place is based on shared vans - will they be brave enough to ditch that whole process and go back to the drawing board?
