if the dogs come running out, don't get out the van, if the owner doesn't appear within a minute, turn round and go, inaccessible.

A totally irresponsible and moronic post. Posts like that are no help at all!

Self defence with dogs always calls for a degree of self restraint and common sense. It appears some on here take it as some kind of macho test of strength and ability.

Firstly if its your regular delivery then you should have some idea as to where the dangerous dogs reside and thus show a certain degree of caution and pre planning as you approach that address. If you see or hear a dog is lose then you do not approach that house or even the surrounding area. You may have to cross the road clear the dogs territory and then when safe continue delivering. Upon returning to the office you bundle and endorse any undelivered mail “dog loose” if this involves 5 or so houses then so be it.

The circumstances in the origin post seem to indicate that the postman had clear warning that one or more dogs were loose and was in some danger of being attacked. Therefore he should have retreated and left the property and endorsed the mail.

If in the rare case that a attack is inevitable you must take into account the size of the dog before you retaliate. A full kick is plenty powerful and could prove lethal to a small dog. Also with a much larger dog one kick will prob only make it more aggressive and inflect even more damage upon yourself. Your better off to shout as loud as you can which may have some effect if the dog is trained. Other than that try to back off with the pouch out front.

The only time I would say that "anything goes" is in the worse case where say you are on a estate and a two or more dogs are loose and then attack. Even then you would be better to climb on top of something (car) than try a straight all out fight.

If you choose to kick a small dog and then cause a serious injury or at worse kill the animal the results of your actions are going to extend into the future with possible suspension, dismissal and prosecution. You need to think first before you act. :hmmmm
