Re: ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES
If you are getting bags dropped out by a driver, make sure you let them know what time and location you want your first bag. This can save you time hanging around waiting for your bag.

Come in 3 days a week ; do as little as possible; make sure anything you do do delays the mail and buggers the service; insist on a £3million golden goodbye; This is a proven and tested career path, but seeking shop floor advice is a somewhat unconventional first step

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Use big bundles on busy days and small bundles on quiet days - you'll get through bundles quite quickly that way, no matter what, and it's always a bit of a thrill to get through a bundle.

I would try to avoid the big bundles altogether mate....it's bad for the tendons around your elbow..you don't want to end up with postmans elbow.taurus88 wrote:Use big bundles on busy days and small bundles on quiet days - you'll get through bundles quite quickly that way, no matter what, and it's always a bit of a thrill to get through a bundle.

Re: ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES
I think it depends on how you hold your bundles. I favour a vice grip and it has caused me no problems so far. I note that the favoured method is what I call the 'cushioned hold' where the mail is simply rested on the arm. When I tried this, I ended up picking it all up off the floor. In the rain. I'm still not sure if people that day ever did end up with anything other than a kind of papier mache rather than actual letters.fishtank wrote:I would try to avoid the big bundles altogether mate....it's bad for the tendons around your elbow..you don't want to end up with postmans elbow.taurus88 wrote:Use big bundles on busy days and small bundles on quiet days - you'll get through bundles quite quickly that way, no matter what, and it's always a bit of a thrill to get through a bundle.![]()

Always rattle the gate of a house if you think there may be a dog loose particularly if there is a big garden and a long way to the letterbox.Apply even greater caution if the householder may do cash business like a plumber ,electrician ,burger van man or ice-cream vendor because they will always have an Alsatian ,Rottweiller, or Doberman lurking around and will be trained to attack.

and take two empty 500ml bottles as there probably won't be a toilet facility on your walkDave1962 wrote:Take plenty of water/drinks out with you to avoid dehydration, two 500ml bottles fit nicely in the right hand pocket of your pouch bag.

Re: ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES
Great website ! iv added this to my bookmarks!beastman wrote:For those part timers that are regularly put on new walks then my advice would be if you cant get any pointers from someone who has already done the walk (always useful to find out shortcuts, where to park your car, where drop points are etc) then do your best on the your first day and get a feel of it but try and make a written note of all the roads on your walk. Then when you get home look at this great website:
http://www.viamichelin.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
this is better than google maps or streetmap.co.uk as it details house numbers. You should be able to suss out the best way to bag up your bundles and where to park if your driving.
I'm a postman-and i know where you live.....

Re: ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES
Don't expect everyone to be your best friend,"new starts" come and go with alarming regularity so many of the staff don't even bother to learn to your name your just a "FNG". Your the equivalent of a WWI fighter pilot if you last 6 weeks, you've probably got it nailed and will survive! or very lucky!. Don't expect a walk as soon as you walk through the door, if you do its probably a horrendous one, no one else with more time in the job will touch.

Re: ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES
According to the new bag weight matrix all newstarts must still weigh all their bags and record the weights.
So DO IT.
So DO IT.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: ADVICE FOR NEW POSTIES
Regarding door 2 doors
1. Put your door 2 doors in the frame with the mail
2. Split your frame into 6 parts, and deliver all the door to doors for that day in the 6th.
3. Don't deliver one door 2 door to every single address on your walk per day.
3. Don't stress out about them. They are annoying, but have to be done.
