The way I see our union is that they only want to represent us on what they want and not what we want, during the recent bad weather they gave no advise to us whatsoever and we were having to make choices on our own backs as to completing walks or even going out and how much to take when we did go, even D2Ds, Gibson is not asking us if we want more than 3 a week, he's telling us we are taking them and that we are not going to turn any work away. What happened to that pledge of thiers from a couple of years back that they are fighting for a shorter working week for us. They act like our bosses at times.

Obviously the old concept "we are the union" passes some by without a flicker of recognition.. :confused

The severe weather operating manual is there for all to see. how can the national union give advice or instruction for every individual office at the first sign of a snowflake? Some areas were under 6 feet of snow - others like ours weren't. Some of our walks could be done with no real problems- others couldn't. So you have to make a decision locally on how you proceed. it is up to the rep and the DOM to make general decisions and for you as a delivery postman to then decide whether you believe it is safe. Can't be done any other way. Certainly not by expecting an edict issued from HQ.

D2Ds, again if they safeguard jobs and are part of the regular delivery as they are now then i don't see what the problem is. If you have spare time on your duty and some people have then RM are going to expect you to work to time. be it D2D,absorption or whatever. The problem I see is that you will still have those people coming in early, not taking breaks and using their cars complaining how hard the job is. If you do the job properly then there is a limit to what they can get you to do. You work 40 hours a week - they can't ask you to work 42 or 44 or 50

think about it :arrrghhh

The severe weather operating manual is not recognised by the CWU for a start.
Secondly you assume that all offices have H&S reps. Many don't in fact some have no rep at all.
If you check the posts on this forum you will realise many DOMs tried to "clawback" hours lost to severe weather.
The weather hit US on the 17th Dec and it took until Jan 6th to recieve comms from HQ regarding SWOP.
Regarding D2D,fine if implemented properly, disasterous if not.
If you have double slots you may be trying to fit 10 or 12 D2Ds into one slot. :hmmmm
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

No it is not agreed - i realise that and I'm sorry i was a bit ambiguous. I did say it is up to the rep to sort it out with the Dom on a local basis but as you say if there is no rep you have a problem - same old story innit? Yes some DOMs will try to stop pay or claw back hours which brings us back to the forum subject. we pay our subs to get this sorted and make sure they don't take liberties - which they will if there is no union presence - so consider that before you all leave the CWU.
