I can do the job, after 24 yrs no customer complaints, no warnings over sickness and no disciplinary action against me,
I've earned my seniority, 24yrs ago would you have given a monkeys that I was working monday to friday 3pm to 10:30pm then on saturday 8am to 4pm, or 20yrs ago doing a dble delivery of a 20 storey twr block with a lift as well as 10 floor by floors without lifts or 22yrs ago working the nite shift 10pm to 8:30am with an hr enforced overtime to do a nite walk, As a young man I would have much prefered to have been able to be out with my mates on a friday nite :nana
My point is that the senior men have already done and stuck out the s**t walks that you are doing now, I didn't complain then and I don't complain now when men and women senior to me can sign for a better duty.
Your argument seems to be... you put up with unfairness when you started, so people who start now have to put up with the same unfairness.

Forgive me for saying that you don't seem to have learned from your experience.

Bloody hell westlondonpostie I say you can do the job alright, I thought I was doing well not having 1 day off in nearly 2yrs but 24yrs with no customer complaints no warnings for sickness and no disciplinarys that's good going my friend and I salute you - you deserve your seniority and I hope I can achieve 24yrs and have your record :Applause :Applause :Applause
Thanx Ghost, didn't mean to blow my own trumpet just replying to the to the "if you can't do the job" comment.
A big well done with the 1 day sick, don't think I could do that always try to work my sick so I can have a bit of an un-official holiday :whistle

Ethilfrog of course people just starting now have to start how we started, would you like a new starter to come in and after a week or so ne allocated the best duty in the office because I wouldn't and even more to the point I wouldn't even want a newbie to take my walk off me because as I see it I've been there 2yrs and I've earned my right to have that duty but I'd happily give it up to somebody who's been there for 1 day more than me because whether it's 1 day or 20yrs they have more seniority than me!

It's not unfairness, I wouldn't have expected a senior man to put up with the crap I was doing when I started as as I knew that when he started he had to put up with the same, and I knew that if I stuck out the job it would get easier for me in the future,I could have left but I didn't.
Is there a fairer way of allocating duties? Should it be left to managers to give em out to they're favourites or maybe give all the hard walks to the capable Postmen and the less capable ones should get the nice straight forward walks with no floor to floors? or for those who have stood up to the Management bullying or have been a bit to vocal about changes that Management want to implement are given a different job each day.
I hope that seniority remains as when I'm approaching 60 in just under 18 years I won't be doing a delivery that may well be the death of me!
Is there a fairer way? :hmmmm

All this discussion about Seniority and is it acceptable keeps coming up and in all the threads I have asked the non supporters what they would replace it with. Yet to date I don't have reply so I shall ask again.

If you don't support Seniority as a method of selection what would you replace it with. Anyone care to answer- in fact I'll start a new thread to see if I get any replies.

Hi TBT
Just as a thought, how about getting all those that reply must state how long they've been in the job. :nervous

Possibly but as it could be used along with other information to help identify people I wont insist on it.

But for fairness - me 5 years and I support seniority.

I posted the below in teebs new thread...

I'm 13 years in,i'm about half way up out of 30ish people.
When i was 1 day in i recognised and respected seniorty straight away.

I had kack when i started and a bit of kack now,in 20 odd years time it will be less kack.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Is there a fairer way ? Surely there must be, or we are simply giving up. You cite the usual complaints of managers dishing out plum duties to favourites, and the lead-swingers being treated leniently -- both of which I have experienced. As I said in a previous post, I am in processing, not deliveries, but the arguments are the same wherever you are. Do not get me started on the guys in our mail centre on PDC letters -- many of them seem to have retired already, they just haven't stopped coming in to work ... and when I see that I'm sorting more packets per minute than they sort letters per minute, and then have to move to the letters to bail them out after the packets are done, well, it's time to reflect that I'm working indoors, for comparatively good money, I don't take work home with me, and the guys on delivery may well have a much worse deal. (Actually, I just curse.)

The problem of weak management affects all functions and I think this is something which will have to be addressed, simply because if it isn't there won't be a company by the time you're 60. Remember, if you've got a manager who is a bully, he's weak. What's more, he probably knows he is. Strong managers aren't bullies, they don't need to be. Unfortunately many of our managers haven't been given the necessary skills. I've done well because I have always felt able to challenge management when it has been clear that I could win (the trick is to choose your battle carefully and not waste your energies on trivia). Some people can't do this, which is why having a good rep is so important -- and god knows I could have done with one in some of my battles, but I was part time and the CWU wasn't interested, so I was on my own`. Your problem sounds as if the duties aren't fairly arranged. You already know what the solution is; the trick is achieving it ! Have you a good rep ?

In another post someone said, if not seniority, what would we replace it with. Other companies use such criteria as ability, aptitude, skills, physical capability. It's not difficult. Tesco does this and it is a successful company. RM is, in a very real sense, insolvent. (Aside: our mail centre has a skills register, but when they assign overtime and SAs it is never used. Plus they constantly direct a guy with a disintegrating knee towards the stand-up packet duty !) Truly, I do not understand what the problem is aside from simple incompetence.

Also, can we have an answer to the question I put in a previous post:

Don't people who joined RM in later life deserve better than being treated as permanent second-class citizens ?
