We now haven't gone out for a week. The mail has had to be taken out of some slots in my fitting and bundled up. There is a bag's worth of mail to every third of a row on the fitting, ignoring the packets. The packets are so numerous that I can't even remember where they are all for. I have filled every bit of the top row on my fitting with packets, and have that again next to the fitting. Some roads have three bags worth of packets, when on a normal day they would have just three packets, period. Consider that the weekend just gone plus today is expected to be the busiest for internet sales and you just know that these packets will not reach their destination. I have another full packet bag left because I have nowhere to put anything else, and with Tuesday being bad for packets there will be another bag and a half tomorrow.

The managers are still running around imploring us to force letters into our frames, even though there is no room. We have tomorrow's mail to add to that as a bare minimum and will be faced with complete overload. They want us to do half a walk when we do eventually go out - even if that were possible, which it isn't (especially when we won't be allowed to use our bikes - safe to go out in but not to use the bike), it will only be the equivalent of trying to empty the ocean with a pint glass. No doubt there will be pressure from above to sort things out, even though in man hours we effectively have 30 hours of mail in our frames at present. Suffice it to say that I shall not be pushing myself any farther than necessary to aid our delivery office in clearing the backlog. If I was a manager, I would be thinking of contingency plans.

At present, they're simply running around trying to justify their existence.

No deliveries in my office today. Even though we went out from Tuesday to Sat last week.

Witnessed some duties with up to 6 dropbags of packets, others that simply hadn't gone out for a whole week now and various other duties where people have been taking out part of the walk one day and the other part the next day in order to keep at least some level of service going.

We ended up getting sent home but not until we clarified that we wouldn't be banking hours, infact quite a few of us were happy to stay at the office until 2.15 if nessacery even though we know (and made sure that the managers know) that there is no provision within RM for banking hours. Our new DOM seemed to be completely petrified about making a decision on whether to send us home or not.

If there isn't any fresh snow tommorrow I can see us going on delivery because if we don't our office is just going to explode and shower central scotland with DSA mail and shattered dreams of management bonuses.

Why do people use hot water to clear the ice from their steps, when any fool can see the water is then going to freeze and leave a thin sheet of ice on the steps?
Why do people do that? It isn't a normal way to behave.

Reckon it's worse now than last week "up our way" - roads clear - pavements piled high with snow from cleared drives - slight thaw on Sunday gave way to sub-zero last night, enhancing the "Torvill & Dean" experience underfoot. Still going from cleared paths to 4 or 5 inches of virgin (if "crackly") snow and back again (lost one spike from each of the "spikies" so far). One bonus - all lapsing cancelled 'til after Christmas (although it didn't help much today - came in expecting to find fully prepped frame ... HA !). At least the second lot of mech that never turned up on Saturday arrived today

Two bonus - got my first Christmas tip today

... and so to Tuesday ...

Phoned the office this morning to be told to stay at home due to the horrendous weather conditions ( central Scotland). So it's going to be a great day although not looking forward to tomorrow when I'll have to deliver twice the mail.

Back Home! Just as well, it is skin stripping cold now, I don't think we'll ever catch up with deliveries. Couldn't they come up with winter delivery sledges or something?
Or even the skidoo type things they have in Canada!

One and a half bags of mail. Half a bag and two panniers of packets. About 3hrs 45 mins. Still icy in places so I took my times. For some reason mail that should have been for Manchester, is stuck in Bolton.

We also had a machine breakdown.

As soon as we got in at 6am we were told to tie up whats in the frames from yesterday and go out with it.

The result is for all intents and purposes a clear office, though I imagine there is going to be alot of people off sick the rest of the week now. Temperatures at 6.45 when alot of people went out was -15 degrees and barely got warmer than -7 as the day progressed. There are still people out there right now doing deliveries :|

Our Dim decided today to have a huddle and told us all mail to go out

, even though some of it is 4 days old

we still have bad underfoot snow/ice conditions and he still expecting us to take out the lapsing

We just took out what we never done yesterday and the previous 4 days of mail , I don't know we bother with managment would be better of saving his wages we can do a better job on decisions

After walking in the snow and Ice my legs were like jelly, bloody shattered, and I have only been back 2 days

We were told when we went in this morning to stop chucking out and take as much as we could up to, but not exceeding, one half of our walks. Even with that the place is a complete mess. Some people have six packet bags under their fitting as well as bundles of mail that won't go in - that's ignoring the stuff that's in or on top of the bleeder already. My fitting's a complete mess, there are two packet bags I haven't touched because I have too many packets already. Heard someone chatting today, as I walked by, about the mail backlog and how it would affect the things they'd ordered. They're not worried 'because it should still be here by Christmas'.

Not on this walk, buddy. I give you no guarantees, except that I shall not be breaking my back for you.
