Whats the point of a 6 hour contract?, I am on 25 hour but do overtime to around 30+ hours and this is still not enough do you have another job?.

My advice is don't turn up. If you have had to come on here to find out what you will be doing and have been told nothing by your employer I wouldn't even bother getting out of bed, RM have no respect for employees anymore. Find another job. Theres plenty of shop work available on a Saturday morning.

I've been part time a couple of months now, and just found out I'm supposed to ring in when a Special Delivery is carded. I just took it back to the office at 1:30 with the other packets that I'd carded, and he said he had it down as delivered! Now, I'm not going to leave my walk and hunt around for a phone box, not am I going to get one of these new fangled 'mobile telephones' just so I can ring in, so from now on I'm going to make sure I'm back at 1:00.

I was tolding nothing aswell. Had to ask everything. Just realised two minutes ago from reading these forums that I'm an 'AG'. There was a notice for AGWalks about saturdays on the notice board (now gone) and I ignored it as I didn't know I was an AG!

Not to worry though, I'll be sacked soon as all my letters were SOAKED today! It was really chucking it down, and I tried (but failed) to keep letters dry. (Any tips there?)

I've got a tip for you, don't worry about it. Everybody has to deliver wet mail when it rains. It doesn't matter if you've been here 3 days or 30 years, everything gets soaked when it rains. You would think that with over 340 years experience RM would be able to understand the need for a waterproof bag. As long as you're in the union, don't worry about anything. It is up to RM to inform you of what you need to know regarding the job. ie. Procedure for special delivery items, claiming overtime etc. Find your union rep and let him know you're still in the dark about a few things. Don't say that to your manager, he'll give you a torch.

Make matters worse I was given a SD that was not even for my walk, of course it was a new walk I had never done before so I didnt know that the road went on for 5 miles+. You would hope that the person dishing them out would know. :(

yeah i can tell why alot of you arent really happy with rm. There is alot of stuff that isnt told to you, and its on the job training to the extreme! But i understand it would be impossiable to cover everything as there is so much to do.

unless they provide you with a phone i'd not bother just why should you use your own property for R.M business. Or indeed go looking for a public phone (hard to find anyway) if they require you to ring in then they must provide the means to do so

thanks for all your replys, im not 100% sure what i'll be doing yet, my first day is on friday which is when i supposed i will be trained etc. My job title is OPG (Depot) PDO, if anyone could explain this it would really help. Also who should i ask for on the 1st day, i havent been given any contact names or anything, should i just ask for the line manager? or duty manager? the office wont be open at this time in the morning so should i just walk through into the courtyard area?

Ask for one of these 2 should be sitting in the office, wondering what to do next.

Join. You pay a lot less subscription being part time.

First thing to learn is join the union you never know when you will need the help of a rep!

thanks for your words about the union...think i will track down the rep when im next in and have a chat. Been there for about 3 weeks now, and this saturday im out on my own, luckily they have already told me what round i'll be on, so i can think about what route etc im gonna take. Had a great guy training me which made it alot easier, and so far and made too many major mistakes.
