Manager refusing to pay overtime

Post by Celgar »

Every office is run differently - in some you can book extended delivery and in others you can't. Our office is like yours where it isn't possible to book extended delivery so work gets done unpaid when we are busy.
There is some flexibility ruling regarding finishing earlier on Tuesdays and using that time saved to cover going over on busier days but I'm not that clear on it. My personal viewpoint on the situation is that DO staff shouldn't be penalised for less mail be sorted for Tuesday's and held up somewhere in the MCs. That situation should be changed so MC do a full shift every day then there would be less chance of having to work over time unpaid.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

Just a quick update.

Finally had my meeting after putting in a grievance about being refused payment for 30 minutes overtime(refer to my initial post)

Lasted all of 5 minutes with the neutral manager agreeing that the DOM couldn’t retrospectively tell me I owed them time and paid me the 30 mins there and then.

So if your reading this and you feel you are being bullied, harassed, treated unfairly at any point by anyone in Royal Mail, don’t sit back and take it, fight it and show them that you won’t be pushed around anymore. You can win your fight, in fact you will win your fight when your in the right.

the whole set up of claiming overtime is RIDICULOUS and designed to make it hard for us not to claim and for them to be in a position where they can harass and intimidate people into not claiming.

Royal Mail needs to get a better system.

On the other hand, posties can go deliberately slow to claim overtime.

THE PDA ACTUALS SHOULD BE PUTTING A STOP TO THIS! WHY ARE THEY NOT BEING USED?

What about al the favourite little turds who finish early but claim 2 hours for half an hours work? THEY DON'T GET THEIR OVERTIME DOCKED? They are the type of people who will shout the place down and tell the manager to his face to f off. They also informally run the place.

The manager goes after the weak ones who don't want to speak up. He chooses the ones he THINKS he can get away with stealing from. THE HONEST, HARDWORKING ONES!

Also, don't forget that the favourites have easier walks. YES, THEY DO! They've been in the job a long time, they get to pick the easier walks. So they NEVER GO OVER AND NEVER HAVE THIS PROBLEM.

The ones who do go over have the longer walks....obviously! And the new starts are swindled because they don't claim their break at the end of the day and they don't want to complain.

So what is it? They go over because they drag their feet or because they have bigger rounds?

It could be either. The PDA actuals should confirm which one it is.

I can hear it now with these PDA actuals, and paying extended delivery, and the same things been going on for years. If one postie gets back on time, then another on the same round claims extended, then all you will get is they can do it,why cant you? You are too slow, you are not up to the job etc etc. So really these PDA actuals will not be used in the way they should be,only used to create yet more bullying and intimidation.Oh I am so glad I am out of all this.

Hey mozsupportsrovers
How do you put in a grievance? Is there a form?
I am due over 15 hours in overtime - accumulated over 8 weeks. DOM refuses to honour. Says I'm underperforming - but says the same if I suggest cutting off. I can't win. Union say I'll get paid for the work, but how? What is the process and how long does it take?
Any advice appreciated.

Hi cookiewise,

I firstly informed the problem manager that I would like to put in a grievance about the situation.
I also informed my union rep and I was printed off by the manager the grievance procedure.

I was then informed that my line manager(neutral in this situation) that a meeting would be held to hear my problem.

One thing or another it took over 4 weeks to have this meeting, but when I did have it, as my above post, I was paid the money straight away.

The process should have been quicker but in the end I got what I deserved.

I think, you'll have to check, that you can ring HR and put the grievance through that way and it then gets logged on the system and that way they have to deal with it asap.

I just kept pestering the neutral manager everyday about it.

Just make sure you have everything documented so that you don't forget anything when you get in the meeting with dates and times written down etc etc

Good luck and keep us posted

How would the PDA actuals know? It shows where you are at what time. . what else?
