Not every MC will have the room to fit in a parcel sorting machine. Apparently they're massive in size, probably only new builds will have the room to fit one in

They will find a way! It won't be time efficient to manually scan every parcel and time costs money

OK - The simple essentials.
Like a mobile phone, will it have a simple button to briefly depress to lock the screen to prevent accidental operation?
Will it NOT have that annoying 'oink oink!' every 10 seconds when the battery is getting low, thus wasting more battery?
Will the backlight operate for more than one month from new?

If so, wonderful!

The battery is low is a pain, takes an age to get something signed for. The scanner that i've now claimed as mine is broken but in a good way. The battery always says 100% no matter how low it really is. As long as i charge it every so often it works a charm.

Just from that it looks like you'd need a massive space, it probably makes a TOPS 2K machine seem small

Never worked in a MC so you would know better than me but do you seriously think they'll have every parcel/packet scanned by hand? Surely it's not practical or achievable?

No because length of stride on its own has no bearing on speed, and if it did it would be countered by it taking more energy to move a larger/longer body than a small/shorter one - so it balances out. Its the stride length and stride frequency together that determine speed.

Seems to me that the day to day reality of working in Royal Mail is that actively dragging it out is the way to go. Both management and the union seems to collude in the self delusion. Everyones on the gravy train.
It seems counter intuitive - it doesn't make any business sense at all - but that, to me, seems to be the reality of it. Mine is obviously not the experience of the majority - but at the same time I can only speak of my own experience.
Good guys come last etc

Could we get the CWU to petition Royal Mail to make the PDA's use an open source operating system - just to be on the safe side.

Or am I being paranoid



ps. I work in an area where 2g coverage is sketchy (no 3g)- thats why I asked about the gps

It's the chargers in the vans that have ruined the present PDA'S,not that they are any good anyway,but lots of small charges are deadly to a battery.

That'll probably be the MC spec, hopefully the new ones will download any data stored on them when they're sat in the cradle

cant wait for things to go wrong with these. collections not going through the system. tracks, rcrds and specials not going through. its going to be a messy one i think.
