It might be an idea but not that easy to set up. It would probably need planning permission and the same people who would benefit from it, would oppose it like mad anywhere near where they live, just as they do with mobile phone masts.dtyssmshdchrb wrote:This! Although somewhat idealistically dreaming, I've always envisioned a sort of large scale, secure vending machine type set up, at least Post Office sized though. Just get your parcels delivered there if it's preferable for you and pick 'em up any time 24/7 by punching in your address pin number. That'd cut plenty jobs in a few areas.SpacePhoenix wrote:Long term the solution is going to have to be some sort of "collection point" shop where people can goto to collect ones that don't fit through the letter box or those that need a signature![]()
Also, whilst I'm dreaming - hopefully by that point in the future someone will have developed a new means of transferring text and image information by some sort of electronic, global wireless networking system and there'll be no need for incredibly wasteful and archaic mediums like ink and paper. Can you imagine how much more convenient and efficient that'd be?

In my experience it depends on where you deliver and the knowledge you have on the round. These brand new estates seem to be full of people that get packets all the time and now one likes one another.

We have more deliveries than that and the average number of returned tracked is 12-15 per day! Tbh it's not that hard to get rid of most of them, there's usually a neighbour that is obviously in. Anything else other than Tracked gets carded straight away though.5plusbonusball wrote:In our d.o. out of over 100 deliveries on an average day there are at least 150 returned tracked parcels that have been 739'd so your not on your own bringing them back. The parcel is safe, the customer had the tough luck and the neighbours are all happy , the only damage done is to your lazy manager's bonus - what a shame!

It's not hard... BUT it most definitely is time consuming. Time that has not been built in to deliveries.OnAFlyer wrote:We have more deliveries than that and the average number of returned tracked is 12-15 per day! The average walk gets what, 5-10 tracked per day? Some of those will be in, so you end up trying maybe 2-3 neighbours on average. Just do what they ask, if that means you haven't got time to complete then it becomes their problem.steve1873 wrote:It's not hard... BUT it most definitely is time consuming. My office is going through a revision rep asked our planner to put in time to do DTN and was told that we would only get 53 seconds as per all other revisions already in place.
Was also Ignored/glossed over by area and DIV at a branch meeting.
My rep also told me this...

The union use to check every week if we were doing delivery to neighbour, there is a league table on it in my area...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Deliver To Neighbour - Worth The Aggro
They'll be an eventual backlash from those "Neighbours"! Royal mail might be able to tell us what to do but they haven't allowed for the short patience of the average British Neigbour.
I've already started to encounter it. Those neighbours who were initially quite keen to help out are getting pissed off with it. At first it was only the odd parcel here and there, but now the same people seem to be getting more and more. And it's just not us it's all the other couriers as well!
Especially those little Culdesacs were there's probably only one old retired couple who aren't at work. I've had a few say, "I didn't use to mind but now it's getting a bit too much"! Not a problem I'll take it back!
