30 to 40000 more vehicles on the road, consuming fuel, servicing, cost of replacing is just a starter. More managers on higher incomes and bonuses. Computerisation probably millions per year, PDAs. More levels of senior management swallowing up huge salaries and bonuses. Business rates are probably a lot higher. Then you get to total mismanagement of the business, money thrown away on the likes of being the best in the World whatever it is called.Modernisation practices such as walk sequenced mail that has cost a fortune but provides probably less than 60% of our mail actually being sequenced and saving time. You could go on and on with this company but we have had success governments that have allowed them to carry on throwing money away. Then you get to increased competition which has lost them revenue.

In fact I used to go home, have a couple of hours kip, have a shower and meet the lads down the local and we would grin that we were still being paid OT.

Haha we used to do this regularly on Fridays. Do some second deliveries or half a walk on OT, meet in the pub at 1pm and have a laugh that RM was buying our beer for the next few hours! And they still made 800-900m profit every year.

Yep, the Good old Days. I really can't think why things would have changed though..

Yes I know it was un real but it was just a couple of weeks a year. No DSA so all premium paid mail. Royal Mail prob made 2 months profit in those xmas weeks so it was like giving something back to the staff.

No not the DSA kruss, it's been badly managed for a good number of years. There's been a lack of real planning and poor judgement at the highest level. The amount of work necessary to reach the targets set is beyond the pale. Even worse the amount of part time employees now required to work beyond their contracted hours to either make a decent wage or because they simply cannot complete the duties in the time allowed and are then cheated out of overtime and nobody seems to give a toss.

Yes there is that of course.

In my office the 30 hour contacts seem to get around within time. Its us slower / older / longer service guys which tend to book the odd 30-40 mind extended.

Just as now that Cheltenham's mail comes from Bristol Mail Centre, you've got upwards of 10 or more trips to Chelt. per night. It's approx. 37 miles from Bristol MC to Cheltenham DO, whereas it's 8 from the old Gloucester MC. So 10 x 37 = 370 miles as opposed to 80. That's each way, so x by 2 for the overall figure.
Of course, this is replicated up and down the country. RM's fuel bill must be astronomical, not to mention wear and tear on the vehicles.

forgetting just christmas, but back about 10 years ago, the average duty on an average day would have about 4-5 comfortable pouches - and that would be it - oversize packets would go to a driving duty. Once that was delivered (average duty 2.75 hours), come back to the office for break then second delivery which consisted of about 10 letters (yes, really if you didnt work for RM back then).

Well it was a gesture albeit misplaced still it's quickly denigrated into nothing in a packet. They didn't come from RM but from Suttons as a thank you. RM only distributed them.
