Very few larger businesses are run in a responsible manner any more. The days when the businesses were owned by say a couple of entrepreneurs who looked to the long term for an industry that would last, provide them with a comfortable living and money to reinvest back into the business for it,s long term future, and provide local people with good long term jobs and a desire to make the business work as much as the owners, have long gone. They are now run by directors with a remit of making as much profit as possible for the shareholders any old way they can, and they do not look much further than the end of their noses or timespan in which to do it. Result, cripple the workforce, get paid huge bonuses and off they go to destroy the next industry. I am afraid that this is the scenario we have at Royal Mail and the current incumbent at the top was brought in by this tory government who thrive on this style of management, to do exactly that.

Re: what are RM manager looking for in their managers.
I'm fairly new to RM (14 months in). My previous manager saw me twice in 12 months...once to get me to sign something about a day off sick, the second to have a go at me about swapping a day off with someone else.
The new manager hasn't seen or spoken to me in 2 months.
If this is typical of RM managers then the "them and us" situation will never change. I don't know RM well enough to understand how or why this has happened but it seems endemic and presumably will never change. I only hope that the original poster gets the opportunity to change this situation, if only in a small way.
