She was appointed to do exactly that - make the company profitable - in readiness for future privatisation. Without growth and profitability, the company we work for will continue to decline, threatening all our jobs. We don't work for a charity, we work for a business, that already has a shareholder who demands a return on their investment. That ethos won't change after privatisation. What will change is who owns the shares in Royal Mail. It won't be the government, it will be private investors who will probably have an even more aggressive focus on profit, profit and more profit.

If you ran your own small business, employing say 20 staff, and the nature of that business was changed by technology and competition, which resulted in less and less demand for your product, would you keep 20 staff on, even if there was only work for 15 ? What if your profit-margin on each item you produced was so wafer-thin, that being overstaffed by 5 meant your business became loss-making ? At that point, you basically have two choices: continue on with your head in the sand, see the business go bust and 20 people lose their jobs, or try to restore the business to profitability by a combination of adapting (modernising) and cost-cutting (losing five staff).

Sometimes in business, tough decisions have to be taken. Moya, or whoever, can have their salary and the responsibility for throwing people out of work, but it's not a job I would want to do. Profit is what will support ongoing jobs with Royal Mail. Without a profitable business, we're all fecked.

when i read the comments from m greene what i took out of her comments was to try to get the company to increase pkts etc reduce wages and turn us into pt workforce citing tnt holland as example of 9hr contracts.
that must mean about 500,000 pt staff to cover duties then :left:
oh and i would really trust the wee guy up the road who gets mail dropped of to deliver in this country they would steal the good stuff and bin the rest especially if it rains.
and her comments about independant scotland would mean international mail rates good because all our utilities bills mobile ,telecoms ,banking etc come from england so all the buisnesses would need to pay scotland international rates as well whoo hooo scotland going to coin it in then.
oh and dingo you pished on your free juncket with rm ive never seen you with so many spelling mistakes
bring on the revolution let britain burn cos its coming

There's a difference between making a profit & making a profit at any cost.
How much profit is enough ?

As for less & less demand, just ask any delivery postie if they're carrying less and less in their bags today than say 10 years ago ?
15 years ago my walk had 2-3 bags a day, the same walk has 6-8 bags a day now.
Volumes dropping ? I don't think so
mail trays used to be counted as 252 items on avg. , overnight RM started to count them as 152 items a tray.
Scales in D.O.'s have been removed to prevent weighing of the mail. Managers have to enter the figures given to them by their MC managers.
Figures that cannot be independantly checked can be suject to abuse, massage & manipulation.

RM's problems began with DSA, Until its removed, the decline will only continue.

RM & the CWU should have joined forces to resist DSA

Both of them did NOTHING to oppose it, and yet WE are the ones paying the price.

Perhapse I have got it all wrong, but I don't think so.........

How much profit is enough ? Royal Mail is being run as a commercial business these days, not - unfortunately - as a public service. Letters sent by the public now represent a very small proportion of the traffic we handle. If anything, it could be argued that RM has for many years been primarily a service to business, not the general public.

I don't dispute for one second that individual posties are carrying more mail. Even if volumes had remained the same, that amount of mail is now carried by 50,000 fewer posties, so of course it means more bags for those that still work in deliveries.

Wandle, thats what I like about RMC, we may all have different ways of seeing RM & different solutions to its problems.

But the one thing that we all have in common on this forum is that we CARE about RM. We all want to see it do better. And thats why we engage on this site.

Its near the knuckle and was close to being amended, however yours contained abusive expletives that definitely broke the threshold for the rule.
