It's amazing how much things vary from office to office. This is not a big deal in our reasonable size office (were told 175 employees). I have done collections with my girlfriend in the front seat no problem, managers have seen it, not a problem. On one occaision I jokingly mentioned I should use one of the big HGV vans to buy stuff from IKEA as my duty took me past it (about 20miles away) and the manager told me it was fine.
Definately;
a) This company varies massively from place to place.
b) Some people here exagerate consequences.

If you get the right person seeing you, the consequences will definitly not vary from place to place. Do your job right, mail integrity is very important and having a non royal mail employee in your passenger seat both voids insurance and in royal mails eyes could be a possible threat to stealing mail. I have had people ask for a lift and i point blank refuse them, its not worth it.

just goes to show the difference at some offices, a lad was sacked last summer for picking his bairn up from school, he was spotted by the dsm who had him suspended then sacked. union fought for him to no avail. lost his i/t as well. makes you wonder
