Re: walk sequencing pressures
Last Friday night started work at 11pm. Saturday morning delivery staff start badgering us for their sequenced mail cause they start an hour earlier and we start at the usual time.We walk sort the sub offices mail because they come in for it 1 hour 30 minutes earlier than in the week.Sequence our own office mail but finish about 7:15.
Managers start hasstling us while we perform the TPM.Walks to throw in,don't want people breaking off on a Saturday.
By 8 o'clock office like the Marie Celeste. 10 past 8 handed 3 bundles of mail from a lapsed job and told to go and deliver it.
Usual familiar line "You're not off till 9"
Union rep says nothing we can do about it.When the office revision comes in some time in the next 40 years we'll be sequencing all mail so we won't have any spare time.
Delivery staff start coming back to office at 11:30.I get in my car to drive home at 1 minute to 9.
Now lets sit back and wait for the "you chose to be a machine op,you chose to do nights etc" posts

Re: walk sequencing pressures
As POSTMAN suggested. You should go to the Area H&S Rep, if you haven't done so already. If the Area H&S Rep can't/won't sort it out. Phone HSE on: 0845 345 0055. I'm quite sure they'll be less than impressed with the situation you're facing. And don't worry. You don't have to give your name, unless you want to. Just where you work (they'll need the address to investigate), and details of the H&S risk. Particularly the number of people suffering as a result.AnnexeB wrote:What has your H&S Rep said about this?
We had a `fatigue study` a couple of months back. Two people came in, and each individual could outline their problems, concerns, issues...whatever...in supposedly confidential terms. Everyone waded in with their concerns, H&S issues, etc......, then i found out they were employed by Royal Mail. We were led to believe they were independent.
We havent heard anything since, and H&S never ever ask us if everythings ok !
On the points about hitting targets .... what we cant fathom, we were trained a specific way by the company who make the machines, and time and again it was drilled into us that we were being trained in the most efficient and SAFE way possible. Yet, since training, which included managers too, the job has been completely re-structured to hit these targets ... with no heed payed to the official training. But what we dont understand, the job always got done, properly, and on time, doing it the way were trained originally !!!!!!
As for missorts .... no one understands this, not even the engineers, but the letters go through the machine 3 times. Whats puzzling is.... the machine still throws out missorts during the second and third pass.....even tho they`ve gone through perfectly, during the first pass. !!!!!!
Whatever you do. Don't let it drop!

We have exactly the same problem, but we fought that scenario, by stating that, if the posties were going early, and were being paid till 1pm on a saturday, but leaving at 8am .... there was no way it was taking them 5 hours to deliver mail. They had plenty of time to do lapsing or whatever.
The compromise we gave, was, we would throw walks off, but as soon as the first postman left the building, we could go !!!!!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: walk sequencing pressures
Another week, another 2 days that a machine broke down or malfunctioned, and 3 days out of 6 that we got more than 60% of mail late from the MC.
The office ran much better when we just got walksorted boxes.

Re: walk sequencing pressures
I've been working on CSS machine for 12 weeks or so. The pressure from the manager to reach 70% and above OEE is quite unacceptable. We have been 'Sweat Tested' and passed but still its not enough. We do not have a proper and fair 2 hours on and off rotation. Some have more batches to complete than others! If we ask how some of the other operators get 70% on a regular bases we get no real help and how we could improve. Some of us are new to machine operating and we've not had any time to get experience before being hasseled with OEE targets. I would love to reach a higher target but I don't understand what I can do to improve I seem to be doing everything right. Is it the clear down times or more in the run time.... The continous hassel is not needed. It's harrassement. The practice of recording our batch times on paper should not be accepted as its open to abuse all the figures should be aquired via the management system.
