Is that the same as our over-stretched, under-resourced armed forces? I have no doubt that we could defeat Argentina on an equal battlefield but thousands of miles away I'm not too sure. I don't want to fight any war just so that some greedy f***wit can make a crap pile of money................just like Iraq really (and by what it looks like Iran).opgpat wrote:Argentina is now a democracy and the Argie public wouldn't support a conflcit. Plus their military now are too weak to take on the UK's high tech, highly invested armed forces.
Democratic governments since 1983 had straitened the military bugdet and disproved any major equipment purchases. Argentina military spending is one of the lowest of South America [6][7]

Yeah but the oil will belong to UK Plc not a company.
The Falkland Islands were completely uninhabited when they first came to be discovered by Europeans. After a lot of disputes the UK came to be in control and have been there ever since, that was in 1833. So we have as much claim over them as white Australians do over Australia or the US and Canada do over North America. Forget it Argentina.

As a Majority of the falkland islanders wish to remain under British Rule their will should hold sway. If it changes then by all means welcome the Argentinians in, but only as a result of a democratic vote.opgpat wrote:Yeah but the oil will belong to UK Plc not a company.

I bet you'd be hard pushed to find a solitary single voter for an Argie administrative take over of the islands. Look what the did last time they paid a visit. The minefileds are still being cleared today.
We should understand the War was about a military dictatorship in Argentina desperate for a good news event to keep them in power. Their claim was and still is bogus. The Falklands are over 300miles from Argentina. If proximity and something about the seabed shelf (!) is the only basis for their claim then we could claim half of France and all of Holland as UK territory. FO Argentina.
