do not resort to abuse if people of a different political persuasion or viewpoint to you, post on a thread.

If members cannot follow the simple rules above is it any surprise that the Telegraph, Mirror and the dispatches program are showing us in such a bad light. Think before you post and behave like the full grown adults that you all obviously are.

BTW thanks for hijacking a thread that asked a simple question just so some can have a slanging match about seniority.

"Also you can purchase more leave upto a maximum of 6 weeks ......"

Just worth mentioning, if I remember correctly, is that the maximum you can purchase up to if you are on the Wallington System is 5 weeks.

To qualify this, having had a chance to check with an old colleague who is on Wallingtons

If you go on a Wallingtons (ie 6 day week, every 6th week off) and you are on the maximum 6 weeks annual leave (ie after completing 20 years service) then your annual leave is reduced down to 5 weeks (you still get the same number of days, just that a 'weeks' holiday is then 6 days not 5 days out of your total allowance).

You can however buy an extra week to take it back up to the 6 weeks.

Hi guys

I'm new to the forum, and relatively new to Royal Mail. Can we resurrect this discussion please? There are 15 on my list which, despite what's being said here, is based on seniority, and I'm 13th. I didn't get any time with my kids last year, and I've only managed to get October half term this year. Surely it would be fairer to circulate it, yes on seniority, but only pick your main fortnight until the list comes round again for the second time, then pick your third week, then round again for your fourth week. Then everyone should get a crack at the summer. Not rocket science exactly is it, just common sense as far as I can see.

Also, if I were to 'buy' extra weeks, how much do they cost? And do they get listed on the 'standard' holiday list, or separately? Just thinking this might be a way around the problem?

I think you will find the purchase of leave varies from office to offfice   In our office and neighbouring offices the people who purchase leave actually pick after everyone has picked their allocation of annual leave i.e 23 1/2, 26 or 30 days dependent on time worked.... So all you get is the office's leave offs, you have more chance of winning the lottery than getting a full week together set aside school hollidays :mad :mad . The purchase of leave is of no use to those of us who want extra time off with our children etc, but if you want odd days in the winter then you may be okay....
The cost..... If you purchase an extra week leave then you will pay back a full weeks pay (pro rata of course), the cost will be divided into 52 weekly payments deducted weekly.
In my opinion the scheme is useless.......
Most offices pick 2 weeks, then 1 week, then 1 week then odd days, lists are turned from top to bottom and other variants to attempt to make the list as fair as possible...... It's still crap :dance :dance, if I get 2 to 3 weeks which I realy want I think I have done well.....

Well our office and no office I know of uses seniority on an annual basis to choose holidays. I have quite a lot of seniority - and last year I was 149th on a list of 160+ and had a crap leave pick. Our list was originally created using seniority in 4 groups, each year the group rotates so the most senior has first pick year 1, year 2 it's group 2, year 3 group 3, year 4 group 4 et sequentia, that way everyone gets a reasonable pick in rotation.

The way it was done in my old do was as follows. We had the winter, junior picks and summer senior picks first. Trouble was the ones in the middle got really no picks what they wanted.so after the same arguments of why should someone senior get august and someone junior get December as first choice it came down to blocks. We were allowed 12 people off in anyone one week.If there was more than 12 picking "x"week the names went in a hat with a independent person picking the names out. If you wanted that week and didn't get it you were first choice in whatever week you were going to pick next. It was a case of if you didn't get you're first choice tough but the system worked. It was only the Xmas week, Easter and august that caused problems. Still didn't stop the new recruits moaning that they can't have or get them 2 weeks off in august.

I was missing out of time being with my children during the summer holidays because of the seniority rule. My view is I have only one chance of being with my children, and I have worked all my life since leaving school. The out come was rotation had to be done and I fought to get Term Time Leave. My union rep (a runner) with the manager got annoyed at both accounts, I dont mind losing a long week end to the younger staff, got to be a two way street. Its cheaper for me to take the summer off than work and pay a child minder (would cost more than I earn), no family support and I always move to find work, thanks to Thatcher and the rest. I may never have seniority but I will fight to the bitter end to have time with my children when I still have my health. I lost that when I was growing up, children only grow up once.
