The service is going to the dogs, and only the British public could really challenge this, but as we all know they will keep sitting on their fat arses watching Eastenders, until it is too late and the postal industry is a shadow of it's former self.

We cannot fight for the higher politics of what is going on, privatisation etc... We can fight to be treated with respect.

Since royal mail changed the times for starting it means for all of us on delivery a later finishing time...I liked the early start as i could do other stuff in the afternoon, but speaking to the public about getting there mail in the afternoon is a joke. I have delivered special deilverys after the one o'clock deadline, and you wonder why the public are not supporting us if businesses & public are getting important documents after 1pm. I have asked a number of customers if they would like there mail before they go to work and the majorty said yes...it would mean whatever bills they got from us they could easily pay at the bank after there work. I know the internet is here to stay, and some folk don't need to go to the bank, but some folk don't have the internet, so there is a mixed.

Before the change of times royal mail said it was best for the customer getting mail in the afternoon than the morning as they done a survey. I wonder how many people they surveyed to agree to this shambolic mess we and the public are in. If only the public knew what goes behind closed doors, they would be shocked.

We've got no public support because they don't get the service they used to get. This is not the fault of the posties! Pegasus/Georouting will just escalate that problem. The walks are simply un-doable and therefore many folk will have to get used to a sporadic mail service. It's not what we want to do - its RM highflyers. People were used to first post at 7-8 am now they are lucky to get it before 2pm. And they blame us!!

Exactly. They complain about us voting to strike, then in the same sentence complain about their 'lazy' postie not turning up until 2pm.

The unfortunate fact is that the general public are serial complainers. Everyone is always worse off than everyone else and they have no intention of finding out the facts.

Comments on the news sites such as 'i'll send my mail with someone else' just sum it up. Good luck with that.

WHERE exactly are they going to take their business? TNT? DHL?
It'll still be us who deliver their shite.
There are plenty of alternate couriers who will deliver goods. Amazon and Ebay are both considering their options. You can't honestly believe that losing those two 'contracts' will not impact on us? I'd have about 3 packets a day to deliver without Ebay! Packets are where RM make a profit. If they start losing money, then we all suffer even more.

We need public support and understanding.
Same old management propaganda, exactly what they said during the last dispute.
Eh? I'm not a manager.

It's common sense to understand that leading up to Christmas, if our strikes continue and threaten deliveries, the bigger companies will make plans to deliver via alternate means. That's not propganda, that's just the way it will be. we already had the announcement from Amazon yesterday that they are looking at matters, and if Ebay do likewise it will impact on us.

It makes no sense to say 'well yeah but we are delivering more packets than ever now' because these companies are still using us in good faith. You are right though, I had a ridiculous amount of packets today and yesterday. But today I took a rough estimate at how many I would have had if I disregarded what I considered to be ebay traffic, and it halved what I would have had.

You can believe what you like, but I'm not a manager, just able to predict what will happen when those final weeks before Christmas arrive. I guarantee you will see signs on websites saying 'guaranteed delivery for Christmas - we avoid Royal Mail' because I saw the same thing back in 2007!

I don't see any solution to this problem and I agree that the general public have their share of idiots, but we do need to educate them to the situation and get them on side, for all our sakes.

....and yes I voted 'yes' and will be on the gate until the end. Doesn't stop me being able to see what will happen at Christmas.

Ebay don't send packets, their customers pick the choice of delivery.

There are not many EBAYERS that would pay the price of an alternate delivery service ie COURIER, this is were the great british public are miss informed we are one of the most cheapest services in Europe 39p a first class stamp what is that all about. Granted its gone up over the years but hardly with the rate of inflation. My deliverys in the past I have always maintained a great rapore with the customers and have always enjoyed there full support, its fair to say those that do most of the shouting no nothing of the reasons or indeed care why we strike, its just that they dont like there service being disrupted. Sadly its the only thing THE ROYAL MAIL will talk to us about. I can only speak for myself striking is something I DONT LIKE DOING BUT WILL SUPPORT, my preferred method would simply be to work my hours with no O/T (TO Rule) simple but very effective, dont use cars dont come in early dont go over. This would be a big deterent to the Bully Boys of Management. sadly there are weak ones amoungst us that cannot do this.
Why who knows !

This is true, but even if they put on their site, that they recommend another company, it could impact on us. It will probably not be the smaller packets, such as DVD's and CD's etc, but I have heard of a new delivery method people are using for mid to large sized packets now, which charges a flat fee and allows drop offs in stores etc, where customers then go and collect. Collect + or something I think it's called. There are also the typical competitors such as DHL TNT etc, but as you say, price-wise they can't generally compete. People may opt to pay a couple of quid more to get that Christmas present there on time though.

I have heard people saying though, that they will abandon Amazon if they resort to using HDN, so maybe Amazon will reconsider and it will all just blow over and people will perservere.

Ahh I love the dumbass public.

As its my rest day I ve just spent a depressing 20 mins reading through the public comments from the Daily Mail report.

I find it depressing because nearly all the comments appear to come from fellow human beings without an ounce of compassion between them. Quotes such as “sack the lot of them”, “only want to work 4 hour a day” and “lazy and skiving” seem the norm. Its saddening to find these people are still willing to see Victorian values within the workplace and just because a worker protests about his job conditions he should be sacked on the spot and his job offered to the mass of un-employed (or the great un-washed as they seem to view them).
After reading the comments ( I recommend you take time to do so) I truly believe that these people would love to see the re-introduction of workhouses and children placed up chimneys, its quite shocking.

The rest of the comments are typical of Joe public jumping on the band wagon each with their own Royal Mail horror story of lost/stolen letters and miss delivered packets. We all know that with such a large industry mistakes will happen but these are isolated over a long period of time and lets be honest if you used any service daily for many years you would at some point encounter an error of some description.

The people who sit at their computers writing such comments would be truly horrified if they were to attempt employment as a postie under the current Royal mail practice. Coming from the private sector they would be deeply shocked at the threatening and bulling attitude of some RM managers. As for the workload expected and actual conditions found out on the streets I doubt that they have ever experienced such exhausting repetitive work and most would not be in a good enough physical condition to see a week at Royal Mail out. Its a shame and a pity but people who write such things clearly are living in a different world.

Yes we are in the mid of a bad recession and should we be grateful for a job, any job? well maybe yes but not at any costs.
Its also true that the private sector is indeed suffering with greater expected workloads, longer working hours and pay freezes but the conditions in the private sector will quickly change and bounce back once the economy lifts. Its always been the same.
Then you will see larger than inflation pay increases and bounses which unlike ours will not make national news headlines. :mad However with us its not so simple as RM will use the current conditions to squash us down into agreeing to some repressive working practice (i.e.; 2007 agreement) which will continue long into the future even when the recession is but a distant memory in the private sector.

So do we have public support, well it would appear not or indeed very little. But personally i really dont want the support from such folks who made the comments below.

Just an example of the caring comments left about us :

what kind of jobs, and pay do these royal mail staff expect to get if they lose their jobs at royal mail? It's like all these people on benefits, a lot of them want a 50k/year job , and of course they haven't got the skills/experience for it , but consider themselves to be worth more than low paying jobs.

My Mum and I both posted birthday cards to my daughter in the same post box on the same day. Mum's card arrived but mine did not. No doubt it was opened in case it contained money and was then thrown away. Mail now gets "lost" on a regular basis and for anything really important it is necessary to pay for expensive recorded delivery. If there was a private alternative to Royal Mail I would use it like a shot. They are a disgrace and not fit for purpose

Regarding the parcels scam by lazy posties:
A few months ago, I heard the letterbox gently go as I was sat at the computer and so went to investigate.
It was a Royal Mail form stating I hadn't been in when they tried to deliver a parcel.
Yet he hadn't even knocked.
I immediately glanced outside - only to see the lazy swine already a hundred yards away obviously trying to disappear out of sight as fast as he could

Sack them, we need to make an example of them. We are all finding times hard, yet these idiots make things worse. Give the jobs to people that would like to have a JOB and earn SOME money. They really make me sick.

It does seem that every other job has changed over the years, for the better with technology.

But the every day postie still has to carry thier work load around all day 34kg bags(?) and still no-one cares.
Get the average gob-shite moaner from tv news, put them in a posties job for one week and hear them squeel like a pig :Applause

i am finding that customers are supportive and a minute e spent xplaining something is a minute well spent!
allthough is hard to find the time now...
some of my customers are amazed to learn we dont start till 6.00am and dont lave the offiice till after 10.00am.
they just observe later an later deliveries and wrongly assumethat their street has been deprioritized and that other customers are getting the early delivery
instead of them.
I'm a postman-and i know where you live.....
