It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: RM Managers giving car drivers petrol money!!
Darren Cooper, a Postman at Kesgrave DO was forced to use his private car on delivery by his Delivery Office Manager when the DOM wouldn't provide Crew Bus pick up arrangements and told Darren to use his private car in order to save money for Royal Mail. The Delivery Office Manager completely ignored all health and safety requirements, just like at Brentwood. On the 5th May 2006 Darren was involved in an RTA near his first delivery point with his first pouch of mail and 5 extra pouches of mail on board. Darren had to be cut free from the wreckage and sustained broken right patella (wired up), broken left femur (plate put in) left knee shattered (had to be replaced), 2 broken ribs, a broken left wrist and a dislocated left hand. Darren was disabled for life. This wouldn't have happened if there had been no private cars on delivery.

After almost three years this still makes shocking reading ......for crying out loud people, leave your cars at the delivery office.
Please, i wouldn't wish this on anyone, never mind a colleague ...........

Re: RM Managers giving car drivers petrol money!!
In our office they are bringing in the new 2 posties to a van system. Traffic accidents aside I think this will lead to even more trouble. At least using private cars they are a bit more camoflaged on the road. Having RM vans parked all over the place full of mail is like having a "rob me now" neon sign above them. Im not exactly sure how the new system works yet, or if bags are supposed to be left at drop off points. I know that someone had bags stolen from from a shop used as a drop off point. Someone went in wearing a RM coat, picked them up and walked out with them
Can't blame the shop owners after all they have thier own business to look after.
The only safe system I can see is if each bag is dropped off from main offices as and when postmen are ready to deliver it. Meaning the RM will need many drivers sitting around the office ready to drop bags off, and mobile phones supplied to all delivery staff so they can phone through when they are ready. This of course will never happen. So I beleive from a theft point of a view, using privately owned locked cars is probably the safest practical option.... albeit RM getting a freebie by using them.
In our office we were required to provide evidence that we have business use insurance before we could use them for deliveries. Therefore accidents and theft should be covered for personal damage or loss, if not for loss of mail. Of course as per usual this was not paid for by the RM
Just wondering if the RM will refund anyone for the extra cost of insurance we have already paid out, as soon they will be insisting none of us can use our cars with this new ridiculous system..... designed with one purpose in mind, to make the job as crap as possible in the hope people will quit rather than need to be paid off
Oh on a final note, which is safer on the roads... sitting in a car or riding a bicycle? Leave cars at home and be safe? You have got to be kidding

Re: RM Managers giving car drivers petrol money!!
when royal mail are not paying for the insurance, why are people paying extra on their insurance(business) when they should't be doing that in the first place. a car is your property, it takes you to work and it it takes you home. end of.
hope everyone is contacting their MP..

Re: RM Managers giving car drivers petrol money!!
Because it benefits me and so the cost is worth it at the moment. I carry spare clothes for the varying weather conditions. Sit in it to eat my lunch, etc. Sure RM benefits but I benefit far more.Any time I save I use to do what I need to do during the day and it gives me a chance to stop and chat to my customers. I know the arguements for not using cars but if it makes my life easier its worth it. Sure I could use a bike, force the RM to drop off bags etc but I'd still finish at the same time. Using my car means less stress for me.... I have enough of that in my life already and don't need any morejohnsouthwales wrote:when royal mail are not paying for the insurance, why are people paying extra on their insurance(business) when they should't be doing that in the first place. a car is your property, it takes you to work and it it takes you home. end of.

Is it any different from using pouch boxes though?Judgee wrote:In our office they are bringing in the new 2 posties to a van system. At least with a van you can vary how you do the walk, where you park the van etc. From that point of view it would be more secure than at present?

You mean you drop your bags off yourself, in your car? Madness.Judgee wrote:force the RM to drop off bags etc
I used to use my car, and might again in certain circumstances, like when I need to get away quickly, but I have only and will only take myself and first bag to my walk.

I vary where I park my car regularly for security reasons..... no matter where you park a RM van it's gonna get noticed isnt it?
RM vans/ pouch boxes = same temption... one on wheels/one stationary but both CLEARLY visible and an open invitation to thieves and scumbags

Yes but if a van or a pouch box is broken into and the mail stolen then you'll not be held responsible (unless you leave them open), if your car is broken into you may well find yourself on a charge of 'Failing to Safeguard the Mail' and you'll have to pay for the damages yourself (criminals are normally opportunistic and will just strike if the situation presents itself, like seeing you getting out of your car and lifting the mail out of the boot).Judgee wrote:I vary where I park my car regularly for security reasons..... no matter where you park a RM van it's gonna get noticed isnt it?

Three years ago thieves stole hundreds of greetings cards and other post in Oswestry. Bundles of post were taken from mail pouches left for post staff to collect on their rounds.

Re: RM Managers giving car drivers petrol money!!
hell no, wouldnt want to increase anyone's stress, there's enough of that around as it is.
as for someone walking into the shop and taking the mail, the only two things i can think of are either an opportunist had previously seen mail being left there (or passed on the info to someone else in their little gang) or a genuine postie picked it up, stashed it himself and blamed someone posng as a postie.
out of curiosity, how long after this did the real postie turn up?
then again, when someone is fully insured, and had the misfortune to have a break in, depending on what car they have got as boots can only be opened from the drivers seat, meaning a force window entry. or if its a older hatchback, rear window entry, removal of shelf panelling. the worse scenario would be forced locks, body work, boot damage. whatever happens, the driver will have no claims bonus wiped off for making claims. or if the very worse would be, is the removal of the vehicle completely, and the only people who will do this is by knowing exactly what vehicle you have and what your business is, because an opportunist has already seen it previously.
