All I want is a decent wage
a van that doesn't keep braking down
and a uniform
Is that too much to ask ?

So in your view, van share, HCT's etc as we know them will be lost once the dust settles in this dispute?Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑14 Aug 2022, 17:53I think we're looking at such massive changes that it's pointless trying to think about how they would bolt onto existing practices.
It will require a complete change of the entire delivery process.
I personally doubt that pushing an HCT in the dark would pass any kind of genuine risk assessment.

In the medium to long term definitely. So in your view, van share, HCT's etc as we know them will be lost once the dust settles in this dispute?
In the short term you would probably be looking at some kind of hybrid.

The 'we are a parcel company that also does letters' line however aggrevating is hard to argue with in this current climate of traffic decline. How we manage people who can't/won't drive will be the next battle ground. Electric trikes are not the answer

Given the cost of fuel, van leases, maintenance etc. they need to have another look at what current van share duties could be done by HCT. I can think of ~6 van share duties off the top of my head in my depot which could be done on foot, given that the closest current delivery point is less than 1.5 miles away, that would need maybe two dedicated vans to cover excess parcels that wouldn't fit in the HCTs. Savings of ~4 vans.

We are still having HCT duties combined into vans. Gives them an excuse to give you more work.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote: ↑14 Aug 2022, 21:52Given the cost of fuel, van leases, maintenance etc. they need to have another look at what current van share duties could be done by HCT. Which is half a mile more than the current SSOW.IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote: ↑14 Aug 2022, 21:52Given the cost of fuel, van leases, maintenance etc. they need to have another look at what current van share duties could be done by HCT. The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Isn't that a step backwards though, thought the idea for best efficiency was to do them as you go. Your idea is however how I used to do my rural village with crap lighting during the run up to Christmas, I'd try and get the letters done and as many smaller pkts before it got really dark and just did a hrs bigger pkts then.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑14 Aug 2022, 16:43The current last letter time is based on delivering everything by then.So you think they'll make the final letter time an hr earlier than the current 4pm?
I would propose that we should aim to complete letter delivery by 3pm.
If members have to work into darkness it should be based around delivery of parcels from a van not walking the streets in the dark.
If a 5pm finish has to happen I believe it would be better managed if you could finish your letter delivery at 3pm and do another 2 hours of parcels.

Re: What can we expect realistically
I think the parcel hub strategy has put that idea to bed.Isn't that a step backwards though, thought the idea for best efficiency was to do them as you go.
It's obviously still more efficient to deliver most of the small parcels with the letters but why do we need extra staff and extra vans for the afternoon parcels?
Wouldn't it be more effective if we're going to be out until 5-6 anyway that duties were built with 2hrs parcels at the end?
In a market where letters are decreasing and parcels are increasing surely the way forward is to build hybrid duties and gradually reduce the length of letter deliveries and increase the parcel element of the hybrid not continually build longer and longer letter deliveries and then have to resource extra vans and people to deliver the parcels.
Obviously this would be a long term solution and there would be some transitional issues like building bespoke duties for non drivers but the business needs a long term view not the short term, quick fix sticking plaster solutions it keeps coming up with.

It was more efficient back in the day when we had designated parcel drivers and went out on pushbikes but in todays Royal Mail world where we are delivering 6+ bags of mail it means that we need more vans (sprinter size) and possibly more staff.
The company did look at ways round this, was it the 1 in 6 duties to be lapsed to accommodate it all, can't quite remember? But that was to be the sacrifice - bigger walking rounds for the delivery posties but less larger packets to deliver.
Obviously it makes sense to have letters delivered in the morning and the larger packets in the afternoon. So why not just have the morning staff delivering the letters up to 3pm and separate afternoon staff to deliver the larger packets in the evenings when our customers are in?
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Because they'd rather scare the bejesus out of us to accept other stuff instead.
Delivering mail in the dark is ridiculous they know that full well.

Re: What can we expect realistically
Probably not popular but here goes;
full timers/ 30 hr people 8am-3/4pm letters/packets
25 and under 3pm-8pm oversized parcels ( gives Simon his 10+ hour of van use)
1 in 6 walks dropped
( except for rurals which will stay largely the same)
1 Sunday every 7 weeks ( 7 a year)
flexy time dropped
siso in all offices- overtime linked to it.
2 instances of sickness in 12 mths allowed, no sick pay except ssp after that.
6% rise over 3 years.

Plenty offices with no walks you can 'walk' to.
