First of all that's bullshit, nobody goes sick "every other week or more often than that" and still has a job after 6 months in Royal Mail, the attendance standards are far too strict to allow that without intervention from OH and a whole filing cabinet full of evidence from Doctors and specialists. Exaggerating the problem for effect doesn't help your cause but that aside you still haven't given me a sensible basis for an absence policy that isn't based on one man's unqualified medical opinion on who is "at it" which won't fly in any business never mind Royal Mail.
I assure you it is happening in my office and sickness levels here are abysmal. It is the same people going sick most of the time. It's not heresay. It is reality in our office.
SOB,
Might those "same people going sick most of the time" by any chance be the ones working in close proximity to you ? :Applause

The attendance standards in Royal Mail are..

Review 1:14 days or 4 times in a 12 month period
Review 2:10 days or 2 times in the next 6 months
Review 3 (consideration for dismissal ): 10 days or 2 times in the next 6 months.

These reviews are triggered by HR not the local managers.
All stage reviews are reported to DSM level.
Although a manager can disregard a stage review they have to report the reason to DSM level, it's therefore very unusual for a review to be triggered but not issued.
All Review 3 consideration for dismissal cases are dealt with at area level.

If your scenario was true and people were taking sickies "every other week or more often" from start to finish a member would trigger a review 1 after 8 weeks, leaving a 2 week space for issue review 2 six weeks later and be up for dismissal six weeks after that ( that's assuming best case scenario and they don't trigger it in one 14 day absence ). A 20 week career in Royal Mail,?, obviously people have dodged the bullet at review 3 but even resetting everything in another 5 months they'd be up for it again and you don't dodge the bullet twice.

So...bullshit.
It can look like people are off more often than they are for all sorts of reasons, splitting annual leave, swapping weeks or having weeks left over if they've been sick etc. But sure it wouldn't be too hard for managers to work out that certain postie's are off sick 10/13 days on 2/3 occassion s, (so as not to trigger any warnings), every single year. Or how many times has same person been on a stage 1 or 2 over the years. Some people do seem to get away with taking the p***, but without knowing they're circumstances it's hard to accuse them.
Ultimately it's down to poor management, as with many things in RM. But should we all suffer as a result of a few bad eggs and poorly trained managers.

There is already in place a procedure where management can look at an overall sick record regardless of whether they have triggered a stage, look for patterns of behaviour and if necessary have an informal review meeting to discuss how that can be resolved.

Most managers can't be arsed, they're poorly trained in discussing personal issues with other adults and would rather sit in front of a laptop trying to make red boxes go green.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Do love how RM give example on pension of a full-timer with 45 years services getting £12000 + per year. As a part-timer fairly new, if I work another 30 years with RM I'll get pension of just over £2000 per year according to my new forecast.
Hence why most new mostly part-time staff I've spoken to are totally disinterested in the pension talks.
Most doubt they'll ever get a penny the way it's going.

There will be no agreement on pensions the company are enforcing the changes. We have a split workforce and the company want to see how split we are, if its a big yes vote then we have a chance to come out of this with full time jobs and half decent terms, no doubt changes will have to be excepted i.e later starts/split shifts. A no vote or a small yes vote will see full time jobs go and the company move to self employed parcel delivery, part time letter delivery, min wage, min responsibility for them to their workers.

Anyone starting since 2008 are already in the defined contribution scheme which we are told is 63% of the workforce why would they vote for a strike so we don't have to be in the same pension as them also if we go out on a one day strike and we are told we have to sign a new terms and conditions contract before we come back what do you think will happen ? within a week everyone will be back at work under worse terms terms nobody will be able to stop out so don't give Royal Mail the chance to shoot ourselves in the foot going on strike will do just that
