Realistically RM might well have to reverse the SWW at some point
I doubt they'd have agreed to introduce it if they thought there was the remotest possibility of having to reverse that decision. While the union have hailed it as a huge success, I suspect people working fewer hours suits RM's long term plan.
I think I read somewhere that the SWW saves RM millions of pounds. I don't think they would have agreed to it if the SWW wasn't beneficial to the business plan. There is no benefit to posties as we just end up finishing later in the day and have less time to get the job done. With the amount of mail increasing, and even RM bosses reluctantly agreeing that this is true, we need more capacity, in the form of more time or more walks & posties . The SWW just makes the job more difficult and unpleasant.

What if no one 'volunteers' to work Sunday?
Agency

New staff/posties will have it written in their contracts that they are willing to work on Sundays.

It will be in all our contracts, not just part timers, not just new starters, not just floaters or agency or those with least seniority or those who shout the least. Even those who shout the loudest can now be made to work sundays.

Woody Guthrie put me right on this. Excerpt from what he said below:

Royal Mail just did make you sign a new contract.
You just signed it by a margin of 91%.
That's trade union representation for ya.
To be honest the fact that people don't realise that every time they vote in an agreement it changes their employment contract scares the s**t out of me. This agreement specifically introduces 7 day working to your contract with the wording of only "initially voluntary"
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

I'm surprised that they didn't slip in having ALL delivery staff being able to drive for RM

You are obsessed with driving SP.
Not everyone can be a driver, some people have physical issues that prevent them from driving and some people have mental issues that prevent them from driving and some people just aren't suited to being in charge of two tonnes of metal. This shouldn't prevent them from having a job as long as there's suitable work available and there is and will be for a long time to come.

It is possible with the focus on the environment and the fact that the business is trying to move the larger parcels away from the letters delivery that we may see the bulk of letter delivery done with e-trikes or electric HCTs.

Town Centre commercial property outside London is getting cheaper by the day as many retailers abandon physical shops. Perhaps we'll see a separation of letter DOs and Parcel hubs with the letters going back into town centre locations?

Who knows what the future will bring but it's pretty poor form to keep putting the frighteners on any non drivers reading these threads based on your zero evidence.

More likely RM will drop the mail off at the person's home. RM's plans seem to more around moving DOs to industrial estates away from the area that they cover. Over time I think it's more likely that RM will move all DOs onto industrial estates, no problems then with things like lorries being able to get in and out of yards, noise complaints from neighbours

Unlikely the trend (at least locally) is for shops to be either converted to flats or demolished and flats built on the site.

Long term if there are non-driving jobs then I reckon RM will have them pre-prepped and then the person doing the delivery will be apart from breaks, delivering for 8hrs.

Lets face it at some point RM will look at making all duties include driving so that then anyone can cover ANY duty as needed. I don't see any guarantees in the current agreement that they won't do that, do you?

I can see RM pressing for the USO for letters to be cut down, possibly every other day, maybe at the extreme just twice a week

Why would there be any guarantees about something that isn't even being considered or discussed by either the business or the union?

There isn't any guarantees that we won't be delivering shopping either.

That's the point SP.

What the business can't afford to do is supply every duty with a van and run a separate large parcel operation , that would place a huge extra burden on the company's finances and blow any environmental targets out of the water.

They wouldn't have to, they'd just bring in owner/drivers which is bound to happen at some point

I will second that. It's the CWU that wanted the SWW as it's one of their precious 4 pillars. It certainly won't benefit us as we will be starting work at around 8ish instead of 7. The screws will make sure the time ain't taken off the end of the shift which is the main reason why postie's have a tendency to come in before their time and it is what all of us postie's want. No wonder there was such a poor yes vote in the last agreement.

The plan for a shorter week is simple as all the company need to do is recruit extra staff or actually pay decent overtime to existing staff to get the deliveries done. Every day I see deliveries that have not gone out. We should not be allowed to run a Sunday parcel delivery service until we can sufficiently manage a Monday to Saturday one.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

So when this comes mandatory then how would this work with non drivers? Would they be able to never work a sunday? Although I agree that the company should move forward but id also like to see some fairness in all of this.

My best guess is that non-drivers will be used indoors in some capacity as the packets will still need scanned in and sorted, not to mention any mail or D2D items that could be prepped.
