Perhaps it is time for Royal Mail Group to consider moving towards using lower-cost, yet more multi-functional, more powerful and more intuitive to use ruggedised smartphones for Postal Users performing barcode scanning/data-capture activities (like Hermes, Yodel, Amazon Logistics, La Poste, Post NL, DX Group, DHL, FedEx, Belgium Post, Singapore Post...and many others do).....the scanning tech from these guys at Scandit underpins all of these delivery business (see it here)... https://www.scandit.com/industries/post-and-parcel/
If all these post, parcel and courier drivers are using rugged smartphones - then perhaps the market is shifting and the old-brick like Royal Mail PDA's should be consigned to the past??

Unless they've changed it recently, Hermes use the same phyical PDA as RM, just with their own software on the top of AndroidBarcode2018 wrote: ↑08 Feb 2021, 18:43Perhaps it is time for Royal Mail Group to consider moving towards using lower-cost, yet more multi-functional, more powerful and more intuitive to use ruggedised smartphones for Postal Users performing barcode scanning/data-capture activities (like Hermes, Yodel, Amazon Logistics, La Poste, Post NL, DX Group, DHL, FedEx, Belgium Post, Singapore Post...and many others do).....the scanning tech from these guys at Scandit underpins all of these delivery business (see it here)... https://www.scandit.com/industries/post-and-parcel/

Ah but can you still use them for knocking on doors that don't have a doorbell?

I believe Hermes may have a mix of these outdated zebra TC75 devices which are same as our PDA's but are also allowing couriers more and more to use their own phones with Hermes app on them for delivery - same as Amazon, Yodel and other delivery drivers do today - found this video on that Scandit company website - https://www.scandit.com/resources/video ... ase-study/ also their site shows this cool Samsung phone for delivery drivers - https://www.scandit.com/resources/video ... last-mile/ (not sure what those green and red boxes are when scanning though?)SpacePhoenix wrote: ↑08 Feb 2021, 19:31Unless they've changed it recently, Hermes use the same phyical PDA as RM, just with their own software on the top of AndroidBarcode2018 wrote: ↑08 Feb 2021, 18:43Perhaps it is time for Royal Mail Group to consider moving towards using lower-cost, yet more multi-functional, more powerful and more intuitive to use ruggedised smartphones for Postal Users performing barcode scanning/data-capture activities (like Hermes, Yodel, Amazon Logistics, La Poste, Post NL, DX Group, DHL, FedEx, Belgium Post, Singapore Post...and many others do).....the scanning tech from these guys at Scandit underpins all of these delivery business (see it here)... https://www.scandit.com/industries/post-and-parcel/

Ah but can you still use them for knocking on doors that don't have a doorbell?A useful feature.

heheh indeed...I used mine to rattle on a window the other day as was no doorbell - thought I'd cracked the window pane with my handheld brick (mind you - the PDA also comes in handy as a deterrent should i ever get mugged on my round - wouldn't want to get clobbered by one of those on my swede

They decided against fitting in-vehicle chargers because the battery life was a lot better on these PDAs,there was a greater supply of spare batteries and dedicated charging points in the cabinets for the spares.
To be honest I've never had one of these PDAs run flat unlike the last lot where it was almost a daily occurrence.
