This is what worries me. Parking on hills, maybe not quite putting the handbrake as far as I should, or even the van brakes being awful due to bad maintenance....and someone being hit.
As long as you have followed procedure and completed your van checks and if parking on a slope you have left the van in the appropriate gear and turned the wheels as well as just relying on the hand brake then it’s very unlikely there would be an issue.

May or may not get taken off driving and put on a shared duty for a little while. Usually standard practice to get booked in for the RM driving test. If you are a member of the union they will get you off - if not you could potentially lose your job.
It will usually be driver error when this occurs. The new vans with the push button handbrake will largely stop this happening thanks to the horrible noise made when you don't press the button.

You don’t need to be in the union to get off. I can represent myself better than any union official I’ve known if it came to it.

You'd probably be in much less trouble if any damage to a van or property was as a result of a 'low speed manoeuvring' incident rather than failing to apply the handbrake...

This happened twice in our office: one guy got the tin tack (apparently, before my time) and the other got away with it. The guy that got sacked had loads of previous apparently so it was the straw that broke the camels back. You should be okay.

Fyi, regardless of if it's work or my personal car I ALWAYS leave it in gear. Aint gonna move then regardless of the hand brake.

You trolling?! It’s instant dismissal. I know a guys 20 Years in the job a perfect postman, had. A rollaway s damaged a hedge but owner wasn’t too bothered, postie thought best tell dom and that was it he was gone.

This was what I was thinking. Was very surprised by the relaxed responses.

It's been drummed into us for years, apply handbrake, leave in gear, and turn wheels to kerb.

I don't see how you can argue against dismissal if you've signed off on that, but haven't carried any of it out.

Is it only the van share postie who signs for the van that is allowed to drive the van? I get moved around a lot and don't always drive, but sometimes when I drive my partner postie will drive the van a few hundred yards down the road to meet me. Is this not allowed? If management knew about this what would happen....

My concern is that my partner postie one day causes an accident, maybe leaves the handbrake off and the van rolls away crashes into a building or a pedestrian.... what happens if he/she doesn't admit it was their fault? Is it put on the driver who signed for the van?.....surely it shouldn't be.....as at any point the walking Postie could jump in the van and drive it as they have a key for themselves.
Under the law if you have access or the means of starting the vehicle if you drive the van you are liable but if the IB turn up and it is not locked you are both liable this log book thing is not a sufficient when two drivers do the job WHO Signed for the van is only relevant for tracking speeding bus lane and parking fines but they still will not pick the fine up if the non signed driver did run a red light speed camera it is for the individual who so committed the crime to own up if it went to court and those who were found not to be telling the whole truth and nothing more would be found guilty of perjury of which the maximum sentence of 7 years. It is if it goes that far a sad indictment of the friendship we all have with our fellow workers if nothing less the case ofhttps://www.theguardian.com/uk/2013/mar/11/chri ... icky-pryce" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; illustrates this and this was perverting the course of justice so one could avoid getting a ban they both paid a very dear price in the end!
Just to be clear on the bit I've highlighted in bold....

If a fellow Postie who has the spare key drives the vehicle and say, parks it up, has a roll away, something is damaged, someone is injured, killed.....

The Postie who signed for the vehicle won't be in trouble? either with RM or the Police?

I would hope not anyway, would be madness for the signee to get done.

Could be a mess if you have a roll away and your fellow postie (one who didn't sign for vehicle) was the one who parked it and doesn't admit fault. Would be one Postie's word against the others.

Do you guys refuse to let your fellow postie drive the van if you signed it out? or are you ok with them driving it?

Agree with the both of you. As a driver you are essentially in charge of what is a death machine if handled wrongly. Applying the handbrake is probably one of the first things you are taught when starting driving lessons. It's something you do every time you leave the vehicle and I just can't get my head around why someone would forget to apply it. It just doesn't compute for me.

Thanks for responses, I was actually asking out of interest as a guy in my office had the roll away. One of the managers pals so was interested to see what the usual punishment would be.
