Many Tracked items have both 1D and 2D barcodes. With the tracked items we usually zap the standard rectangular barcode in preference because there have been 'issues' with the square barcodes only on the tracked items not working properly in the past. If there is a problem scanning the rectangular barcode on tracked items then we zap the square ones. They are supposed to give the same result but there can be discrepancies and any hassle or blame will often be directed at posties first.
