To be fair it has changed. When I first started there was a modicum of trust between posties and some addressees and thing were done on a nod and a wink.

Nowadays with the claim culture, and with Royal Mail having a clamp down on doorstepping a few years ago (there were some casualties even in my office) most posties, quite rightly are disinclined to do it now.

Postie would use common sense and not leave that note on the front door. Every delivery area/location is different for obvious reasons though and what can be done maybe in a rural or countryside area, as regards the job in it's entirety, could or should not be done on a housing estate or a city area. Have to use your brain.
