Overtime less than basic rate
this normally happens after the first 10 hrs of overtime. after you have worked 10 hrs overtime, the rate of it drops to below basic rate. which is an absolute effing disgrace. it was brought up in our office a few years back with the then union rep. his reply was ''well you voted for it''......did we f**k!! apparently it was part of the 2000 and odd agreement that we all voted for. Dingo might have some clarity.

Overtime costs jobs.

It’s simple really. You get paid less for overtime to discourage you from doing overtime therefore saving Royal Mail money. But as we all know real life doesn’t work like that.

At one time overtime was paid at time and a half but that has long since gone. For years overtime in RM has been about 5% less than what you ordinarily get paid. I sometimes work my day off if we are short-staffed or have people supposedly sick but I don't generally do it for the money. Mainly do it so I don't have to come back to a mess the following day and so my customers receive their mail. Loyalty to the customers - not the leeches and incompetant fools at the top of RM & the CWU.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

I really don't understand this clamour for time and a half etc.daveyeff wrote:this normally happens after the first 10 hrs of overtime. after you have worked 10 hrs overtime, the rate of it drops to below basic rate. which is an absolute effing disgrace. it was brought up in our office a few years back with the then union rep. his reply was ''well you voted for it''......did we f**k!! apparently it was part of the 2000 and odd agreement that we all voted for. If you encourage people to work overtime you cut down the number of people in employment.
Two people working 20 hours overtime each week have just put somebody else (or 2 people) on the dole queue.
That isn't what a trade union is about.

no, am not saying that clash, and I agree with what you are saying. I'm not one who works a lot of overtime myself but I have worked my days off at Christmas time in the past. but this job runs on overtime no matter how well staffed they are. we've recently started 5 new people, but they STILL have people coming in on earlies AND working their rest days, taking them to over 10 hrs blue. I've heard managers and lino's BEGGING people to come in. and once you go over 10 hrs overtime you get less than basic. just wrong in my book.

You have started 5 new people - what are their contracts - 25 hours?
The people coming in on earlies - are they full time staff?
The 25 hours should be increased to include more indoor work to ensure there is no need for the earlier overtime.
That is what is wrong. Not the overtime rate for full time staff once they have worked 49 hours/week.
The poor f***ing darlings are getting a worse overtime rate while ensuring they keep their colleagues on reduced hours.
My heart bleeds for them.

Just checked and my basic rate is shown as £432.92 or £11.10 per hour (39 hours)
My overtime is paid at £11.49 for the first 10 hours and then £11.10 after that.
Although that isn't quite the whole story because you don't get pension contributions or break entitlement in that.

well that's the way it should be. ….but it isn't. you should be the rep at ours cos our reps don't see it that way. the company don't see it that way either!! cos if they had part timers coming in on earlies instead of full timers, it would cost them less, because they don't get the full overtime rate until they reach 39 hours. which would be common sense. but this is RM.clashcityrocker wrote:You have started 5 new people - what are their contracts - 25 hours?

this is because it has just caught up with the basic rate since our last two payrises. it was below basic(after 10hrs) until our new rises kicked in.Spedley wrote:Just checked and my basic rate is shown as £432.92 or £11.10 per hour (39 hours)

I relayed your comments to the rep clash. he says...''it helps the flow of mail through the office..? part timers still get the chance of early overtime to prep duties and to back fill the primary when full timers are on leave and the mail volumes support. an even share of overtime for everyone makes a happy office...….i'm sure you will have a reply to that.

Im guessing due to the rate changes after 10 hours that Royal Mail want people to work overtime but they don't want those people to do too much overtime? Its funny how there are always backstabbers around when it comes to who is getting all the docket!
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

But depending on how you negotiate your overtime you can earn around £16-£18 an hour or even more. For doing an hours worth of work you can get paid 1:45 for it

its always been that way in RM, and sadly probably always will be. there are favourites/arselickers/toadies who get more of their fair share, and when someone gets more or they don't get their day off in, then it blows up. as 'CCR' says, give part timers more hours and there will be far less need for full timers to work excess overtime, and especially when some P/Ts are getting very little. ''stop his/her overtime and give him/her more hours should be the way.

That's exactly what we were told in the way forward agreement(2000). The biggest f..k up the union ever went for and lost a lot of support. No more nda, driving allowance, sat premium, Sun double time, nda on overtime, sa rates down ect ect. A totally mess and the top brass had been taking payment holidays from the pension also. Total joke.postslippete wrote:Im guessing due to the rate changes after 10 hours that Royal Mail want people to work overtime but they don't want those people to do too much overtime?
