Collections people at our office still take the vans home in between finishing their delivery and returning to do collections. I expect that will be stopped at some point as well though.postietom wrote:People do have retentions at our place, I believe one of the rules is you must have a drive to park it on though. They stopped people taking vans home who did afternoon collections a while ago which most used to do.

It might be stopped on paper nationally but try & enforce it locally. Managers are a law onto themselves & their chosen few will probably still take vans home.

Our place seems to be a de facto free for all. Finish, grab the keys to any van, take it home, even if it’s further home than the guy did on the duty. Pure mad

Any company allowing staff to take home company vehicles has to inform HM REVENUE as an employees tax code has to be changed to allow for this ie. The vehicle is now classed as a personal company vehicle

According to HMRC, you won't be taxed for insignificant private use of a company van.
Basically this means commuting directly to and from work, although you are allowed to stop off on route eg. to pick up a paper.

I agree when I checked into it in the past I got the impression you only pay tax if your employer gives authority for private use. Royal Mail expressly don't giver permission so no tax implications.bertie wrote:According to HMRC, you won't be taxed for insignificant private use of a company van.

Royal Mail doesn't ALLOW us to take vans home, it ASKS us to take vans home because there's inadequate parking space at the Delivery Office - and that's a BIG difference.TheTrolleyMan wrote:Any company allowing staff to take home company vehicles has to inform HM REVENUE as an employees tax code has to be changed to allow for this ie.
