The reality of SWW

Post by Spedley »

I agree with your first post banner. The full timers (myself included) will feel like they lose out and the part timers gain. In the short term I will just have to accept this because I see no other way forward but in the long term I believe it will be better for everyone.
In the last few years, as an OPG I have noticed improvements in efficiency. Sequenced mail does make a big difference contrary to what I expected, especially on heavier days. We are starting to get flats through in walk sorted trays and there has been a drop in mail volume since our last revision (except the last 6 months appears busy).
I think there is sufficient proof of a future plan where we do less indoor work and I can't physically do much more ourdoor work so a drop in hours seems like the best alternative.
I'm happy to go with this one and see what happens.

dingo wrote:The sad reality is that more work is coming in machinable than ever before. Royal Mail do not want you to sort into frames but merge work indoor reducing indoor time further. Parcels will over the next couple of years all be bar coded and will come to you in a manifest.

The simple reality is that if you stay on a 39 hour week and your indoor time is reduced than you will have to do a longer delivery span.

Remember Royal Mail will have Automated Hours Data Capture which will know when you start in the morning , when you leave the floor and when you leave the office to commence delivery and if you return to office after completion on top of this they will have PDA actuals which can they track you out on delivery the route you go , where you stop and when you finish. They are also developing a Resourcing and revision tool called final mile Optimisation which feeds all the information into and can produce a weekly set of walks rather than having the same number of walks 52 weeks per year.

So these are the reasons why the shorter working week is needed and if you don’t support the shorter working week than your suppprting a longer delivery span as Royal Mail want you to work all paid hours and the new technology gives them visability like never before.

The hour off the working week will only be on the basis you said ie doing the same amount of work in 38 hours that you did if the data on your duties PDA actuals show that you were finishing early and therefore you can absorb the reduction in the working week.

If you cannot absorb the hour because the PDA actuals show you can than Royal Mail will invest as this is stated in the agreement .

The shorter working week is a no brainier with what is coming in the future from not sorting the first wave in the frame , the parcel strategy , D2D automation and the changing mix of Mail.

It seems to me that the Union has simply rolled over and accepted everything that Royal Mail has suggested. Well try and think of it another way. If we stay on a 39 hour week, Royal Mail can automate more letters and make the rounds bigger all it wants BUT that doesn't mean (as per the overrunning procedure) that we have to deliver it!! PDAs can track our movements all it wants but as long as we have a start and finish time - what is there to hide?? We could just take our time and make sure what little is sorted gets sorted properly instead of coming back to an office after doing our delivery and finding loads of mis-sorts and packets on the walk-sorting frames.

But NO the CWU are too concerned with their daft 4 pillars to worry about what WE want and now all I am hearing are excuses/reasons from the CWU about why we have to change. Why do we need to change whilst the company are still profitable and its shares are doing spectacularly well??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Whilst I agree on some points this is not how you envisage it working out THEY RM will come for every second you are paid forget fannying around and taking your time they will not let you do this. You will be worked into the ground so this why a 35 hour week is imperative it's not some socialist ideal just a fact that automation is coming and 33% of job's done now will be done by machines in ten years from yesterday this is how fast things move the biggest thing the whole agreement lacks is how we treat people workers our fellow human beings. But let us all not forget that with science there have been great accomplishments it is only with the advent of the twenty first century have greed and gluttony become the nemesis of the working man/woman all these achievements that cost us so dearly should be taxed or a fund should be raised so that the labours should not go unnoticed so that those who are disenfranchised be compensated!

".......not sorting the first wave into the frame......" . A quote from Dingo on how RM expect us to do the job.

I would like to know who exactly has thought up this ridiculous notion? They obviously can never have set foot into a DO before in their life! Do they expect us to sort all the rest of the mail, bundle it up, and then sit there with the bundles in our hands and pick letters out of those first wave of mech trays and insert them one at a time into the bundles??? I gather the crazy person who thinks this idea is logical wants to save time and therefore money for RM. But the way he/she is suggesting we could do it will take three times as long. Words really do fail me. If this is what management is capable of and we need to save money then we need to sack some management.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.

Of course they do did you know posties have 8 arms and 16 hands two on each arm if managers are reading which would be a first but hey ho yes they expect us to manage to do the impossible nay the unmanageable for they cannot do it as for the turds at the top they don't get there for nothing full of air you know but the air will run out and will the turds life span and they will sink to the bottom from whence they came!
