Now I'm no ergonomics guru by any means, but a 10 year old could work out that a round with 5% more packets and 5% less letters takes CONSIDERABLY longer to deliver. They might also be able to tell you that if packets are up 20% on last Xmas then deliveries are going to be CONSIDERABLY longer again adding that into the mix. So cumulatively rounds are going to be exponentially longer up til Xmas compared to last year.
So armed with this news, we can expect a whole lot of extra staff brought in on delivery this year right Moya? and no unreal expectations from management? Right? :hmmmm :hmmmm
Thats not strictly true.

If you deliver 1000 letters a day and there is a 5% reduction you will deliver 50 less letters. If you deliver 50 parcels a day you will have 2.5 more parcels to deliver.
The difference is obviously in the sorting time and how many doors less you have to deliver to. Similarly with the parcels, are those extra two parcels going to be delivered to houses where you have no other mail.
Nothing will change. You will have some days that seem easier and a lot of days that are an absolute drag. You only have to work your hours, so I would not worry what the mix of letters to packets is. You can only do what you can do in your time unless you want the overtime.
Sod the figures the 5% extra doesn't include the extra D2Ds or the downsteam access letters. Also our mail vans are being delivered later to our office up to 30 mins later with agency drivers and even less workforce with 6 fulltimers changed with 25 hour parttimers

Where did you get 20% from. The increase in parcel rate is shown as 5% which is an increase of 2.5.

It is true that RM are completely unable to see that walks will quite often vary considerably from the daily average of items per walk. It's a bit strange because there are very often underlying patterns and to an extent the problems could be mitigated by recognising them (eg walk X has unusually heavy Mondays but tends to be lighter than average on Wednesdays - yet RM insitss that all walks in the office have short Mondays and long Wednesdays).

Not really. Managers just turn a blind eye to it, act dumb and harass the duty holders to the point were they go on sick with stress due to the excessive workloads and pressure. Once back off sick it all starts again. RM managers ability to do their jobs correctly is poor to put it mildly. Doubt very few would ever be employed for long in other companies if they worked and treated staff their as they do in RM.

I wasn't in my previous post referring to the fact that in general workload is excessive on many walks. We all know it is and one of my prior posts tries to explain why that is despite letter volumes falling.

What I was referring to above is that you can have a day with 'average' traffic where walk A has disproportionately heavy amounts of mail and packets and walk B is actually fairly light. And that quite often there is an underlying pattern to that which RM do not address at all in their planning and timing. The fact that managers often put excessive pressure on staff and ignore the fact that some walks are just far too big is a linked but separate issue.

Slinder, you are obviously one of these ignorant people who prefer to offer abuse rather than read in to what is being said. For your information the reason I am ex Royal Mail is because I did my time and retired at 65.

I was basing my comments on the opening thread where it was stated letters are down 5% year on year and parcels up 5% year on year.

Brandy wrote:Read the bit in the courier [to be honest I dont know why I bother] about deliver to neighbour. It gets worse,if a nominated neighbour isnt in then you have to look to see who else may be in in the street!! Why dont you try the whole street! As if the postie hasnt got enough to do! I dont know why RM dont put a skip at the end of the road then all the customers can sort through the packets and find their own!!!!!! Ok I know you are to say dont be stupid, but dont RM come up with some stupid ideas!!!!!!!! :shhhhh
Managers always get stressed when you return Tracked Items, I believe it effects their Bonus. :hmmmm If the customer is not in I may try the immediate neighbours (i.e either side) IF I like the customer (and they're not a whinging rat bag that's always complaining about one thing or another) :speak to the hand

If the immediate neighbours aren't in I have no interest in walking up & down the street trying to find someone. I write No Answer on the 739 where it says left at neighbours, and they can come and get it. Most of the people I deliver loads of parcels to normally have a least 2 cars in the family, and despite numerous attempts by me to try and get them to sort out a decent Safe Place they can't be arsed! :cuppa
