Bullying. The way forward?

Keep a diary on you if you think you are being bullied and jot down conversations you have with the bully. Make him/her aware that you are making these notes to build up a possible case against them. It MAY make them think twice. Always have somebody listen in if you are having conversations with the manager, again just adds to any evidence. It may be frustrating but you have to try and fight back.

Friday our second lot of walksorted and 10 yorks of Orange badge flats arrive 40 mins late ,all manual and we have only 2 people on the IPS due to the office staff down to the bone and all the others doing 2 frames, tracked or parcel sorting. DOM shouts out " come on you lazy bleeps you have been standing around doing nothing for the last hour , everyone up on the IPS. Then after 30 mins he then shouts out for everyone to leave the IPS as there is nobody throwing off"
Where do they get these Managers. needless to say there was a failure in the mail

And I want to do it and make a difference. I want to stand up against bullies. Is it possible to do this? To be a good dom? Without bullying.
Although I will always be criticised by both sides.
Have I just put myself in a firing line?
Is it possible to make a difference?
My own personal opinion is yes one man/woman can make a difference. If you become a leader and a manager and show others how to do it by example then you'll be rewarded by loyalty and dedication from those that you lead.

However, 2 major reports in the last 2 decades have highlighted the culture within Royal Mail and that hasn't changed. In fact, in my honest opinion since Moya took over its got worse. If you check out our Canadian equivalents you'll see she appears to have brought the culture she developed over there to our shores.

Management in Royal Mail is a dog eat dog world, I am personally shocked when I hear how managers, even senior mid level managers, are treated. There is a lack of any real training in how to motivate workers or even in simple basic employment law. Until RM change that I wouldn't recommend going into management, though I wish anyone that does, and who has the best intentions, the best of luck and I hope one day you succeed and perhaps even end up managing me.

With all this talk of bullying on here, are there any examples of staff getting the union involved and actively challenging this culture of fear that's rife within this company for some reason, seems all one sided that we hear what goes on and never any successful challenge to this way of working? What's there spin on it?(doms) I guess there pressured from above and dare not challenge it for fear of being moved on,a sad and sorry state!

In my office the local union rep seems to be in cahoots with the office management! Certainly agrees with them if you have an issue..

Maybe if enough people got their M.P. involved Royal Mail might finally be forced to address the issue? It happened at Sports Direct.

" I know of DOMs doing plumbing courses at college".[/quote]

Surely man management courses would be more beneficial. Mind you our DOM probably has done a plumbing course, because he knows F.all about man management, but is a wiz at unblocking the bog. :nana

Oh yes it can, it has been going on at our D.O. for years. We get a different DOM every year. The last one was a skirt chaser, the one we have now is no different. Thank the almighty, I do not really on RM wage packet to get by, what a way to run a business. I could yet out by this time next week, but I actually enjoy it when I am away from the office. Why can we not get a DOM who knows where his next bed fellow is coming from and turn his attentions to running the office. :wave

The culture is top down and there are quite a few studies available that explore this:

Consequences of Toxic Leadership Behaviours: A qualitative investigation.

There are also studies in how to operate in such environments. Its not much different to interpersonal toxic relationships with the difference being you versus the corporate structure.

The corporate structure demands many things that, in a person, would be seen as 'Dark Triad traits' (psychopathy, narcissism and machieavellianism) so its important to understand it and conduct ourselves accordingly.

Agree with the O.P.... it needs to be quantified, qualfied, challenged and prosecuted.
