so the person im partnered up with will have to wait a further hour before i can get there and get out the door at 12pm,, his duty finishes at 2/3 we wont even complete one of the two walks we have been tasked with, dont you think that is unfair on him, i dont want to make anyones life difficult especially at the heaviest time of year and i have been sent to help out.
Hey you don't want to claim what you are entitled to then fine, doesn't bother me. Working in another office is covered by an agreement. Travelling is counted as part of duty time, but we can't force you to claim your rights.
lightningpostman wrote:im a team player and traveling in paid time is simply against my principles , same as me driving to my do and wanting RM to work some magic and get me there, this year we have seen a huge cut in hire vans for parcel duties , no vans are spare in my DO , creating issues for me is like rubbing against the grain.
They don't have to work any magic - if you have the correct insurance you can drive and claim mileage. If you don't and the Police stop you and check your insurance your car will be impounded. If you are not insured and the business want you in another office they can send you in a van, with a van or by public transport.
lightningpostman wrote:what happened to unity and ties of kindred, we are essentially a team after all.
We are, but what about RM fulfilling the agreement thats in place for these circumstances. Why should you be out of pocket when the system is there to ensure you don't incur any abnormal costs.
lightningpostman wrote:if i get insurance coverd, what can i claimn,
From Royal Mail - Nothing to do with the insurance. But travelling to another office in your car during paid time will get you a mileage allowance (45p per mile IIRC)
lightningpostman wrote:if i opt to take public transport then what?
You don't opt. They instruct you, and if they say to use public transport then you claim the fare back.
lightningpostman wrote:i mean where is there any clear documentation regarding this as these things do happen and we should all be well informed yet i cant seem to find anything, like i said im there for a week, its not short notice i was informed that i would be on loan, i can understand on the day if i was informed but that is not the case here.
How much clearer than

• Working in nearby offices – Areas will identify and agree with the CWU
locally a approach (which could include the use of volunteers and
reserves) to working in nearby offices within employees’ contracted
hours which will include travel times and appropriate travel and
subsistence arrangements
That quote covers your travel time, mileage claim and fares.
lightningpostman wrote:if i was informed on the day that im going elsewhere then i would like to take a van, or get a lift which is both unlikly then i could travel in my time as the clock already started when i got to work at my DO but im there for a week, been given notice so its basically upto me hwo i get there but i would liek to know what am i entitled to claim as im traveling further away from my home and taking more time to get to the office i've been loaned to and possibly paying for a small supplement on insurance to cover me if anything bad does happen while im traveling there.
See above.
the way you you worded your initial response was that i had to travel in my duty time, however with the greatest respect i say this , that my friend is unacceptable, if i travel in my duty time it throws a spanner in the works and has a knock on effect on others, also im there to help , that means doing and completing a duty that has been assigned to me.

i have my own reputation and my colleagues to uphold, im a team player and do not wish to let down any one counting on me be it the 7 year old girl awaiting a birthday packet, the oap awaiting the radio times even local business who depend on me the postmen to provide the service they deserve.

I will do as the guy suggest above, speak to the dom, ask that my travel time + millage is paid before and after i complete my duty at said office and i do believe i would have every right to claim that as the documentation you linked to does not saywhen the travel times can be added.

it only really states that they cannot be forced to work over there contracted times, however if they need me for extra hours be it in the morning or to complete my duty if it cannot be doen by my contract end time then so be i can and will work its christmas and its now more then ever people look to us for the service we provide day in and day out.

Thank you very much for all the responses gents.

good night

Duty time is your contracted hours Paid time is any time you are getting paid, both inside and outside your normal hours.

PAID TIME NOT DUTY TIME.

nothing stopping you going in early or being a team player - just that you can be paid when you are travelling to the other office.

Of course if the manager doesn't want to pay you and thats acceptable to you, there is still nothing stopping you going in early.

That means that they are paying you when you travel to the other office. That means its not added as an extra - its included, Ergo if you have permission to work over then you claim from when you leave your own office to when you get back.

You obviously started this thread wanting to seek advice, the advice you got was freely and impartially given, no one suggested that you should act in anyway contrary to Royal Mail policies and procedures. Being a team player , as you suggested you are, means doing things within those policies and procedures , so that they remain in future for the rest of us to benefit from. Whilst it is up to you whether or not to take that advice ,think carefully about your actions and the impact it may have on your colleagues in the future.

As a relatively new starter could I ask some similar advice here...
Let's say my manager says "tomorrow you're going to another DO".
Now there's no way I will take my car.
Does my duty time start from leaving my normal place of work, and finish on return to that office, having used a supplied van??
So, I am a 25 hour contract, am I correct in saying, say start time 8am at normal office, travel to satellite office, say 20 minutes- I then say to new DOM "I have to leave here at 12.40pm" to get me back by 1pm, and take a half hour break in-between, giving a total of 5 hours??
I just want to be ready and have my facts right.

Yeah it's all in your duty time, just make sure you are back for finishing at1! Can't say anything against it.

Thanks for confirming that Tank.
Just been reading a similar thread with someone being bullied into using their car.
Also been reading up on the recent EU ruling on travelling times so was pretty confident I wasn't barking up the wrong tree.
If anyone has a CWU link to specifically this issue I would much like to print it out and keep at work for if and when the situation arises.
Other links I've looked at give whole agreements and nothing on this in particular.
In fairness I've done pretty well so far in not being asked yet and get on well with everyone including managers, but a lot of others do get asked and move constantly between offices- no idea on what they do with regards paid travelling time- if they don't get it and don't know about this it might make my argument difficult unless I have something to show the manager.

Ask your insurer to add business cover to your policy. This will normally be added for free or a small fee if the mileage you will be doing is quite small. Then simply ask your line manager to pay you mileage. Remember your mileage that you can claim is the distance travelled minus how far it takes you to get to your normal place of work.

If you're working your day off in another DO then mileage shouldn't be claimed.

If you are getting public transport keep your receipts and submit them to line manager for payment

Thanks, but for me this is more about the travelling time involved being in the duty time, as I won't use my car.
If I am asked to use public transport, fine, but on a 5 hour day they would be lucky to get a couple of loops out of it!

My post above in this very thread is all there is about working in other offices, which actually works well because there isn't a lot of wiggle room for the managers

The agreed locally bit is how they choose who goes, everything else (Duty Time, travel, where to start and end, subsistence etc ) should all comply with the national agreement.
