Pulling a Sicky
Lesson to learn here, watch how the odd day off leave procedures works in practice and if its always a NO, then you would be justified in pulling a sickie, just don't tell anyone your intentions.

Get someone else you can trust to ask for the day off.
If they get it then swap and job done.
If not get that person to negotiate some more(swap or day off with no pay ect) and again if yes then swap.
Make sure you 2 have similar jobs/shifts so swapping is easy and straight forward with no potential feck ups.
If it all goes to s**t, then last resort is the sick route, sad times tho it has got to this.
Management have fecked it for everyone-tossers!
Is C4 Dispatches looking in?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Pay someone to work it?
I've done that twice recently. Two separate people on rest weeks were happy to do it for tax-free cash.

As others have said, it's not that RM are just inflexible, or not even that they don't care about their workforce... they're actually vindictive, spiteful, openly hostile and deliberately awkward, they clearly have a real hatred and resentment towards their employees.

If you want a week in July for example - "Mr Manager, SIr, are there any weeks free in June or July?" If you get a straight "Booked up!" or whatever, then you know what to do.
